1 behind -THE- wheel DRIVING INSTRUCTION . faqs WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Students 15 years or older who have a learner's license (or will have one within a week of starting the class), who have proof of automobile insurance, and who attend a Lake County public or private high school. District-registered Lake County home school students are also eligible. WHEN IS THE COURSE OFFERED? The course is offered after school or on Saturdays during the school year and during daylight hours in the summer. WHERE IS THE COURSE OFFERED? The course originates from one of Lake County's seven public high schools or from the Howey-in-the- Hills facility. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST? The Lake County School Board, in partnership with Lake County and the Lake County Board of County Commissioners, is offering scholarships for behind -the- wheel DRIVING classes to eligible Lake County high school students. Therefore, there will be no charge for the 10 hours of behind -the- wheel training and the 20 hours of DRIVING observation.

2 ARE SCHOLARHIPS AVAILABLE? Yes, there are scholarships available. MY STUDENT DOES NOT HAVE CAR INSURANCE. The student will be covered by the parent/guardian who has valid automobile insurance. The parent/guardian must provide a copy of their insurance card before a student can begin the class. If the parent/guardian does not have automobile insurance, a named non-owner policy must be obtained for the student. WHAT IF THE STUDENT CANNOT MAKE ALL OF THE LESSONS? Please review the schedule to verify that your student's calendar can accommodate the time he/she is scheduled, and discuss with your student that attendance must be a high priority. When students do not attend, not only will it affect their required DRIVING time, it puts other students at risk of not being able to complete their course. HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY STUDENT RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP? Currently we are processing hundreds of scholarships; therefore, it would be difficult to call each home prior to scheduling the student.

3 However, if you would like to check on the status, you may call 253- 6780. HOW SOON WILL MY STUDENT BE SCHEDULED FOR THE TRAINING ? The scholarships are awarded on a first come, first served basis. HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN THE VEHICLE? Each class is scheduled with three high school students and one instructor. No fewer than two students will be in the vehicle at any given time. WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE DOES THE STUDENT DRIVE? All student- DRIVING vehicles are well marked and equipped with an additional brake pedal for the instructor. WHO TEACHES THE STUDENTS? All behind -the- wheel DRIVING instructors are Lake County teachers who have received special training in driver's education and have been certified by the State of Florida's Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle Department DO THE STUDENTS DRIVE THE VEHICLES OUTSIDE OF LAKE COUNTY? No. behind -the- wheel INSTRUCTION only takes place in Lake County and students do not drive on the turnpike.

4 HOW DO I REGISTER? Download the registration packet from the behind -the- wheel DRIVING INSTRUCTION page. You can return to the behind - the wheel page by exiting this window. Return the Student Registration, Medical Release and Insurance Information forms, along with a copy of the student's learner's license and a copy of your automobile insurance card to: Career-Technical, School Choice & Community Education 525 N. Georgia Avenue Howey-in-the-Hills, FL 34737. Please make sure two witnesses 18 years or older sign both the Medical and Insurance forms. HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED? You will be notified two weeks prior to the course starting. WILL THE GRANT RUN OUT OF MONEY BEFORE MY STUDENT HAS BEEN TRAINED? The Lake County School District has an arrangement with Lake County and the Lake County Board of County Commissioners to renew the contract, contingent on the success of the program.

5 It appears that this qualification has been met, and we will be able to provide more scholarships once these are used.
