From a safe distance of 10 meters the operator causes a blank cartridge to drive a 30 mm chisel into the Cable . This causes a short circuit in a Live Cable and thereby the protective gear to operate the cir-cuit tripping switchgear. Application When extending an existing Cable network it may be necessary to cut into a power Cable . Although the circuit may have been switched off and locked out, if there are several cables at the site of cutting it is still possible to cut int a Live Cable in Error. A SCHERMER Cable Spiking gun can be used to cause a short circuit in the event that the selected Cable is still Live.

Clamp bottom portion of the gun (loaded) to Cable . Protect adjacent cables. Fit breech mechanism, with safety catch in Safe position. Pay out the 10 meter lanyard to selected operating position and then attach to the firing lever on gun. Ensure area is clear of persons and equipment. Put safety catch to Fire position and retire carefully to the operating position. Fire gun with lanyard. 3 If Cable is in fact Live and if Circuit protection is thoroughly efficient, no audible or visible evidence of short circuit may be observed, or if Protective gear is not in good order ( tripping battery dry, relay set too high etc) considerable energy will be released, determined by Fault Energy Available and time taken before some circuit interruption takes place. In either case ensure that circuit interruption is isolated before handling gun Even if no short circuit appears to have been caused no known circuit breakers have tripped and no known fuses have operated, the gun should only be removed after an interval of time and then using rubber gloves and protective goggles.
