CARLO pappone , MD, PhD, FACC Biographical Sketch Dr. CARLO pappone is currently Director of the Department of Arrhythmology at the Hospital San Raffaele in Milan, Italy. He graduated, with honors, from the School of Medicine of Federico II Naples University in 1986 with the thesis: Effects of iloprost in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction . In 1986 he got his Medical Licensure with the score: 90/90 cum honors. In 1990 he achieved his Cardiology Specialty Degree with the thesis: Transcatheter radiofrequency ablation of post-infarction ventricular techycardias obtaining the score of 70/70 with honors. His electrophysiological training, 4 years long altogether, was partly spent at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, under the tutelage of the Chief Fred Morady, MD (July- September 1991) and at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, OK, under the tutelage of the Chief Jackman, MD (July August 1992).

In 1995 he accomplished the PhD degree in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, at the University "Tor Vergata", in Rome, with the thesis: Transcatheter radiofrequency ablation of atrial tachicardia: mapping techniques . On the clinical side Dr. pappone s interests and expertise are in the areas of Electrophysiology; Catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias, especially of Accessory Pathways and of atrial fibrillation; he contributed to the development and to the following clinical assessment of the nonfluoroscopic mapping; he pioneered the cardiac pacing in Italy, traditional and biventricular; he supported the spreading of the clinical assessment of a new system of Nonexcitatory cardiac contractility modulation aimed at the cure of the refractory heart failure in Europe, also acting as a coordinator. ample proof of his extensive experience in non-pharmacological treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, including the Atrial Fibrillation, is provided by the total number of procedures as first operator (over ) which makes him the most experienced electrophysiologist operator in the world ever.

For the first time in the history of interventional Cardiology and of general medicine he has performed a remote procedure 4000 miles away from the patient opening a new era. On May 18th 2006 he has carried out successfully the first transatlantic arrhythmia ablation procedure from Boston, while the patient was in Italy, miles away. In front of hundreds of spectators, during the annual Heart Rhythm Society Meeting, pappone performed an AF ablation procedure, by using a simple computer keyboard able to remotely control a magnetically guided ablation catheter. The importance of this event is that new frontiers have been crossed, as physicians can now carry out long-distance heart procedures in any part of the world. This is another significant scientific step forward in mankind welfare. This event can be considered as the beginning of a democratic medicine for everyone, as people living in underdeveloped countries can finally benefit from much more experienced centers by the remote ablative therapy.

As far as research is concerned, Dr. pappone 's primary interests include catheter-based treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and electrical therapies in patients with heart failure. Dr. pappone is recognized for his groundbreaking research on a new anatomic approach for atrial fibrillation ablation . He has been the primary investigator in clinical trials to evaluate non fluoroscopic cardiac mapping systems; to investigate the effects of a new cardiac contractility modulation electrical signal for treatment of heart failure; and to develop a novel catheter system for atrial fibrillation ablation . Transcatheter ablation of atrial fibrillation, this latter being an arrhythmias affecting up to 10% of the world population in certain age ranges, is today worldwide known as pappone approach as an acknowledgement of Dr. pappone s high and unrivaled expertise in this field. Dr. CARLO pappone has eventually settled a long and unresolved question arisen in the treatment of patients affected by Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which may cause life-threatening arrhytmias.

His 2 randomized studies, published in the oldest and worldwide renown Medicine journal, the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrate the validity of his approach to determine sudden death high-risk patients. Dr. pappone is the founder and Director of the Arrhythmology Academy at San Raffaele University-Hospital in Milan. Inaugurated in 2005, the Arrhythmology Academy promotes advances in interventional electrophysiology techniques ensuring these are translated as quickly as possible into healthcare benefits for society. The Academy upgrades theory and practice through interactive discussion and comments during live procedure demonstration performed by Dr. pappone , meetings, and training programs are attended annually by interventional electrophysiologists from all around the world. The Academy is accredited by the European Society of Cardiology (EBAC) Dr.

pappone has published 95 articles in international reviews and 22 articles in national review. Dr. pappone is Honorary Member of the most important world Cardiology and Electrophysiology societies, among which Heart Rhythm Society and ACC. Every year dr. pappone is invited to deliver Invited Lectures at the most important and attended American Cardiology and Electrophysiology Conferences He s also been Invited as visiting professor to deliver Cardiology Grand Round at the Virginia University and the Michigan University. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the most prestigious American cardiology journals. Every year Dr. pappone is requested to review about 100 articles for American peer-reviewed Cardiology journals. In 2005 Dr. pappone has been elected Elite Reviewer of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology which is the official Journal of the American College of Cardiology His pioneering research has got the most prestigious cardiology journals to ask Dr.

pappone for editorial comments to many landmark papers published in peer-reviewed journals in the medicine field.
