1 CHAPTER 8 INTERIOR FINISHESSECTION BC of this CHAPTER shall govern the use ofmaterials used as INTERIOR FINISHES , trim and decorative INTERIOR provisions shall limit theallowable flame spread and smoke development based onlocation and occupancy :1. Materials having a thickness less than inch( mm) applied directly to a noncombustible orfire-retardant-treated wood Exposed portions of structural members comply-ing with the requirements for buildings of Type IVconstruction in Section Applicability in flood hazard buildingsin flood hazard areas as established in Appendix G, interiorfinishes, trim and decorative materials below the designflood elevation shall be flood-damage-resistant materials complying with therequirements of this CHAPTER shall be permitted to be used asfinish for walls, ceilings.
2 Floors and other INTERIOR surfaces windows in the first story of build-ings shall be permitted to be of wood or of unprotectedmetal Foam plastics shall not be used as inte-rior finish or trim except as provided in Section or BC following words and terms shall, for thepurposes of this CHAPTER and as used elsewhere in this code,have the meanings shown VINYL WALL coveringconsisting of a woven textile backing, an expanded vinyl basecoat layer and a non-expanded vinyl skin coat. The expandedbase coat layer is a homogeneous vinyl layer that contains ablowing agent. During processing, the blowing agent decom-poses, causing this layer to expand by forming closed cells. Thetotal thickness of the wall covering is approximately inchto inch ( mm to mm).

4 Such INTERIOR finishmaterials shall be grouped in the following classes in accor-dance with their flame spread A: Flame spread B: Flame spread C: Flame spread :Materials, other than textiles, tested inaccordance with Section Smoke developed indexshall range from 0-450 with the following restrictions:Exits, corridors25 Occupancy Group I50 Rooms in which the net100floor area per occupant is 10square feet or lessException:Materials, other than textiles, tested inaccordance with Section INTERIOR wall or ceiling FINISHES other than wall or ceiling FINISHES , other than textiles, shall be per-mitted to be tested in accordance with NFPA 286. Finishestested in accordance with NFPA 286 shall comply with Sec-tions and Acceptance the 40 kW exposure,the INTERIOR finish shall comply with Item 1.

6 For not less than30 these materials are applied onwalls, ceilings or structural elements required to have afire-resistance rating or to be of noncombustible construction,they shall comply with the provisions of this Direct attachment and furred walls and ceilings are required by any provision inthis code to be of fire-resistance-rated or noncombustibleconstruction, the INTERIOR finish material shall be applieddirectly against such construction or to furring strips notexceeding inches (44 mm) applied directly againstsuch surfaces. The intervening spaces between such furringstrips shall be filled with inorganic or Class A material orshall be fire blocked at a maximum of 8 feet (2438 mm) inany direction in accordance with Section Set-out walls and ceilings arerequired to be of fire-resistance-rated or noncombustibleconstruction and walls are set out or ceilings are droppeddistances greater than specified in Section , Class Afinish materials shall be used except where INTERIOR finishmaterials are protected on both sides by an automatic sprin-kler system or attached to noncombustible backing or fur-ring strips installed as specified in Section Thehangers and assembly members of such dropped ceilingsthat are below the main ceiling line shall be ofnoncombustible materials, except that in Type III and Vconstruction, fire-retardant-treated wood shall be permit-ted.
7 The construction of each set-out wall shall be offire-resistance-rated construction as required elsewhere inthis Heavy timber and ceiling fin-ishes of all classes as permitted in this CHAPTER that areinstalled directly against the wood decking or planking ofType IV construction or to wood furring strips applieddirectly to the wood decking or planking shall be fireblocked as specified in Section INTERIOR wall or ceiling finish that isnot more than inch ( mm) thick shall be applieddirectly against a noncombustible :1. Class A Materials where the qualifying tests were made withthe material suspended or furred out from thenoncombustible INTERIOR finish requirements based on wall and ceiling finish shall have a flame spreadindex not greater than that specified in Table for thegroup and location designated.
8 INTERIOR wall and ceiling finishmaterials, other than textiles, tested in accordance with NFPA286 and meeting the acceptance criteria of Sections , shall be permitted to be used where a Class A clas-sification in accordance with ASTM E 84 is used as INTERIOR wall or ceiling finishmaterials, textiles, including materials having woven ornon-woven, napped, tufted, looped or similar surface, shallcomply with the requirements of this Textile wall wall coverings shallhave a Class A flame spread index in accordance withASTM E 84 and be protected by automatic sprinklersinstalled in accordance with Section or the covering shall meet the criteria of Section when tested in the manner intended for use inaccordance with NFPA 265 using the product mounting sys-tem, including Method A test the MethodA protocol, flame shall not spread to the ceiling duringthe 40 kW exposure.
9 During the 150 kW exposure, thetextile wall covering shall comply with all of the follow-ing:1.
