It can also be used as a tool for pressurizing anengine cylinder to hold the valves closed while perform-ing to Perform a Comression TestPrecautions & Diagnostic Notes:WARNING: DO NOT use the ignition switch during thecompression test on fuel-injected vehicles. Use of aremote starter switch to crank the engine is recom-mended. Fuel injectors on many late MODEL vehiclesare triggered by the ignition switch during the crankingmode, this could result in a fire hazard or contamina-tion of the engine s oil with use eye protection when performing compres-sion engine in good operating condition will produce acertain amount of pressure in each cylinder. Normally, the cylinders should be within 10 percentage points ofone another and within the manufacturer s specifica-tions. The pressure should rise smoothly on eachstroke of the engine, until it reaches a the pressure reading fails to rise, or it remains thesame for several strokes of the engine and begins torise, the likely cause of the problem is a sticking two adjacent cylinders show pressure readings of 20or more pounds below the other cylinder readings, suspect a blown head a cylinder shows a pressure reading of 15 or morepounds higher than the other cylinders, the probablecause is carbon build-up inside the Mityvac Professional COMPRESSION Test Kit canperform two tests : the dry COMPRESSION test and the wetcompression test.

The result of performing these testswill provide an indication of the condition of the pistonrings, the cylinders, and COMPRESSION Test Procedures:1. Refer to the appropriate service manual for thecompression specifications specific to the engine youare Start engine and allow engine to run until it reachesnormal operating temperature (usually about 15minutes.) Turn engine Install an auxiliary starter switch in the starting While wearing eye protection, use compressed air tocarefully remove dirt and debris from the area aroundthe spark Remove spark plugs one at a time, marking thenumber of the cylinder they were removed from, andplace them on a clean flat surface. This will aid you inidentifying problem cylinders by allowing the compari-son of spark plug appearance to the compressionlevel of a given : When testing engines with two spark plugsper cylinder, it is only necessary to remove thespark plugs located on the exhaust On vehicles with standard distributors, disconnect thecoil wire (high tension lead) from the distributor capand secure it to a suitable ground, or disable theignition by disconnecting the positive (BAT) terminalfrom the ignition On vehicles with a distributorless ignition (DIS),disable the ignition system by removing the electronicignition (control) module fuse, or disconnect the crankangle.

Refer to the appropriate service manual todetermine which fuse or component to temporarilyremove or Remove air cleaner from carburetor or throttle bodyand secure throttle linkage in wide-open throttle(WOT) : NEVER place anything inside the throttlebody; internal damage to the engine could result. Onvehicles equipped with port fuel injection, removethrottle linkage covers (as necessary) and securethrottle linkage in the wide-open throttle (WOT) Number - 4 Form 8235419. Crank engine several times to ensure removal of anyforeign matter that may have fallen into the cylindersduring preparation for Select the appropriate adapter fitting (14mm, 18mmshort reach or 14mm, 18mm long-reach), and threadadapter into spark plug hole of cylinder Connect the appropriate test hose or adapter to thegauge Crank the engine at least five COMPRESSION strokes oruntil the pressure reading stops increasing Read the pressure level on the gauge and record thereading along with the cylinder number being : #1-150 psi, #2-145 psi, Repeat this test on each cylinder.

If any of the cylinderreadings are found to be low or uneven, perform wetcompression When COMPRESSION test is complete, return thespark plugs to their respective cylinders and thethrottle and ignition components to their COMPRESSION Test ProcedureCAUTION: DO NOT perform the wet COMPRESSION teston any diesel engine. The higher COMPRESSION in adiesel engine may cause engine damage or injury tothe wet COMPRESSION is a way to remove the influence ofthe piston rings, pistons and cylinders from the com-pression test. After completing the dry COMPRESSION test, squirt approximately one teaspoon of engine oil into thespark plug holes and crank the engine several times toseal the piston rings. Repeat the dry COMPRESSION testoutlined above. NOTE: If the readings during the wetcompression test are greater, then air is leaking aroundworn or damaged piston rings.

If the reading is approxi-mately the same for both wet and dry tests then thevalves, valve lifters or the camshaft lobes are worn. Anylow reading of cylinder COMPRESSION indicates worn ordamaged Engine COMPRESSION TestingThe Mityvac Professional COMPRESSION Test Kit has two(2) adapters, 10mm and 12mm, that allow it to be usedon small engines found in lawn mowers, chain sawsand line trimmers. To use these adapters:1. Disconnect the spark plug wire and remove the Thread the appropriate size adapter onto the com-pression tester main hose end until the o-ring seats(do not use a wrench to tighten).3. Thread the assembly into the cylinder spark plug holeuntil the o-ring on the adapter seats firmly (do not usea wrench to tighten).4. Ensure the spark plug is grounded to the cylinderhead or is insulated in a way that will prevent anelectric shock Crank the engine over using the pull cord (or starter ifelectric) a minimum of 5 revolutions.

This will allowthe cylinder to build sufficient COMPRESSION to Refer to the manufacturer s data to determine thecorrect readingUsing the Pressure Hold AdapterThe Mityvac Professional COMPRESSION Tester comeswith a pressure hold adapter. This adapter is used toperform valve seal replacement on an engine withoutremoving the cylinder head(s). To use the adapter:1. Remove the spark plug from the desired Select the appropriate extension hose that will fit thespark plug Using the valve core tool (from the field service kitincluded), remove the valve core from the end of thehose and lay it Thread the extension hose into the spark plug holeuntil the o-ring seats; do not use pliers or a wrench Attach the Air Hold Adapter to the extension Attach a shop air hose to the Air Hold Adapter, this willmaintain air pressure in the cylinder to hold thevalves closed while performing repairs.
