See magneto maintenanceand overhaul manuals L-1020 and L1037 for overhaul Pre-Teardown Operation InspectionA. Prior to removing the impulse coupling from the magneto, spinthe impulse coupling in the direction of rotation stated on themagneto The impulse coupling should engage the stop pin in the magnetobelow approximately 140 RPM.

4 If the impulse coupling pawls slippast the stop pin or engage intermittently, the impulse coupling isnot operating :The speed at which the coupling pawls engage ordisengage cannot be determined accurately whenspinning the coupling by hand. Accurate service BulletinISSUEDREVISEDPAGE AIRCRAFT ProductsA Division of Unison Industries, Blackhawk Park AvenueRockford, Illinois, 611043 OF 9 ASB 1-86 Areadings for such coupling engagement ordisengagement can only be made when the magnetois driven at a constant speed by an electric motor orsimilar : The magneto will produce spark voltage whenimpulse coupling is operated. Keep hands awayfrom the distributor block and condenser stud whenimpulsing the Remove impulse Remove cotter pin, nut, washer and drive :Impulse coupling washer may be scored slightly fromcoupling nut.

6 Neither of these conditions isacceptable. Replace impulse coupling as Inspect the impulse coupling hub for cracks, or corrosion. Neitherof these conditions is acceptable. Replace impulse coupling Inspect the hub shaft and keyway for deformation or impulse coupling as Inspect impulse coupling pawls. If the latching end that contactsthe stop pin in the magneto frame is rounded, peened, orexcessively worn, replace the impulse Inspect pawl retaining rivets. If rivets are finger loose or showindications of movement, then replace the impulse Measure the clearance between the boss on the underside ofeach (2) impulse pawl and the pawl plate using a feeler the latching end of the impulse pawl over the pawl plateas shown in Figure TWOG.

7 Maximum clearance for pawls with one (1) boss is clearance for pawls with two bosses is inch forleft hand rotation couplings and inch for right hand rotationimpulse couplings. If the feeler gauge can pass between the fullwidth of the boss and the pawl plate replace the impulsecoupling. See Figure three. For coupling rotation see magnetodata service BulletinISSUEDREVISEDPAGE AIRCRAFT ProductsA Division of Unison Industries, Blackhawk Park AvenueRockford, Illinois, 611045 OF 9 ASB 1-86 AFIGURE THREEH. Inspect magneto rotor shaft. Remove burrs and chips from shaftwith a fine abrasive cloth and clean all surfaces. Chips and otherabrasives must not contact oil seal. Dimples in the rotor shaftthat affect the performance of the impulse coupling require rotorshaft replacement.

The groovemust be intact and unbroken, replace magneto frame as Inspect the retaining teeth of the stop plate and mating magnetoframe. All eight (8) retaining teeth must be engaged in the magnetoframe. No broken, missing, or deformed teeth in the magneto frameare allowed within (4) teeth either side of the stop plate.

Inspect the stop pin for looseness, cracks, or corrosion. None ofthese conditions are acceptable. Replace magneto frame asnecessary. See Figure SIX2. Inspect the stop pin for flat spots. Flat spots are a normal sign ofwear and do not, by themselves, require corrective action. If theflat spots are excessive and cause the impulse coupling pawl toslip past the stop pin, either the impulse coupling, magneto frame,or both components need replacement.
