Interplastic Corporation is thehigh-performance corrosion resistantresin specialist you can count on. Foryears, we ve assisted reinforced plasticscomposites manufacturers and theindustries that use reinforced plasticsbuild better, stronger, tougher, andlonger-lasting 1959, we introduced a line ofisophthalic and orthophthalic polyesterresins with outstanding laminating, casting and molding about the same time, wedeveloped a line of top-performing gelcoats for a wide variety of , Interplastic gel coats give you extremely durable finishes for abrilliant surface in whatever color youchoose. In 1976, we announced our line of epoxy-based Vinyl Ester Resins thathave set the standard for the extremely challengingenvironments that require superiorphysical performance and corrosionresistance, Interplastic s CoREZYN Vinyl esters consistently outperformthe competition.

CoREZYN Vinyl Ester Resins (designated VE ) are a family of liquidthermosetting Resins developed for theproduction of fiber-reinforced are an ideal choice for severeapplications, particularly in highlycorrosive environments. The vinylester products exhibit similar strengthcharacteristics to epoxy, but they areless expensive and much easier tohandle. There is a wide variety ofresins available within our Vinyl esterfamily to meet a broad range of designand engineering needs, and all of them possess corrosion resistance andexceptional physical properties. Thistoughness and durability, compared totraditional polyester Resins , is clearlydemonstrated by the flexural cycletesting shown in Table 1 (page 2).The high strength-to-weight ratio and superior fatigue resistance of Vinyl Ester -based composites makethese Resins an excellent choice forautomotive, military, aerospace and other applications where thesecharacteristics are critical.

Fiberglass pipe, tanks, scrubbers, and structural shapes using CoREZYN Vinyl esters have delivered years oftrouble-free service in the chemicalprocessing, mining, oil and gas, pulpand paper, and pollution to water permeationand abrasion, combined with lightweight and good flexural strength, make these products outstanding formarine applications such as boat hulls, swimming pools and spa gel-coated or acrylic-faced, Vinyl esters vastly improve the blisterresistance of spas and applications where themaximum corrosion resistance of avinyl Ester resin may not be essential, agroup of Interplastic products calledmodified Vinyl esters (designated MVR )offers a lower-cost alternative. Theseresins are chemical modifications of thecorresponding straight Vinyl esters ,developed to achieve specific, thoughslightly more limited properties, withimproved economy.

Our industry is complex anddynamic and our chemists arecommitted to a continuing program of applications research and productdevelopment. Consequently, some newproducts and custom formulations maynot be covered in the brochure. CoREZYN Vinyl Ester Resins areepoxy-based, thermosetting Resins thatare cured by free radical initiation ofpolymerization, similar to the curingmechanism of conventional polyesterresins.

There are numerous types ofreactants that comprise the Vinyl estersso that each resin has its own uniqueproperties. However, the chemistry canbe typified by the most versatile ofthese Resins , the CoREZYN Vinyl Ester is the reaction productof a bisphenol -A epoxy andmethacrylic acid, as depicted in themolecule on page 1. The terminal carbon-carbondouble bonds are the reactive groupsthat enter into the free radical initiatedpolymerization or cure. In effect, thisstructure allows an epoxy to react like a polyester. This by itself is veryimportant since epoxy reactions ingeneral are very sluggish compared tothe polyester free radical important feature of thisstructure is that it is styrene soluble, the styrene also enters into the freeradical reactions.

Since styrene solutionsof Vinyl Ester Resins are low in viscosity, this makes the resultant resin solutioneasily worked in the reinforced plastic(composite manufacturing) Resins , on the other hand, arehigh viscosity materials and requiremore difficult and expensive processingmethods. Compared to epoxies, the vinylesters are fast and easy to handle, quickcuring, and versatile. At the same time, they have been designed to retain mostof the desirable properties of epoxyresins. Tensile strength, elongation, and fatigue resistance of VE8300, forexample, are very close to the premiumaromatic amine cured epoxies, andsignificantly greater than a typicalpolyester resin, as shown in Graphs 1and 2 and Table 1. Their constructionis shown in Table 1. Even the adhesive characteristicsof VE8300 are of the same order as theexcellent adhesive properties wellknown for epoxies.

This is demon-strated by the compatibility and bondstrength of VE8300 to glass, graphitefibers, and to newer high strengthorganic fibers, such as KEVLAR .Technical Data2 Table 1: Laminate Cycle Testing for Comparison by ASTM D671 ResinStrength,Cycles atCycles atCycles atCycles atpsi/MPa for 1 cycle8,500 psi/MPa 10,000 psi/MPa 11,500 psi/MPa 13,000 psi/MPaVE830021,218/1465,448,341874,4871 40,36022,528 Orthophthaliclaminating resin14,436/1002,517,45060,7381,46535 Isophthaliclaminating resin16,117/1111,744,815102,9396,0833581 . Laminates were constructed of 3 plies of 24-ounce woven roving, with 4 plies of alternating 3/4 ounce fiberglass mat fora total of 25% glass. The laminates were hand laid at room temperature using 1% methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP)and ASTM D671 Flexural Fatigue of Plastics by Constant Amplitude of Force.

KEVLAR is a registered trademark of the DuPont Company. The chemical resistance ofVE8300 represents the best of twoworlds: the excellent alkali resistanceof the epoxy and the acid and oxidizingchemical resistance of the alkali resistance is retained sincethere are relatively few Ester linkages, only terminal groups. These terminalester groups are made hydrolyticallystable by the hindrance afforded by themethyl group of the methacrylic 3 and 4 showing the results ofwater immersion tests on a variety ofresins, including Vinyl Ester dramaticallydemonstrate this characteristic. In addition, the copolymerizedstyrene offers steric hindrance protectionto acid and oxidizing chemical attackon the Ester groups. Further enhancingthe overall chemical resistance of thevinyl Ester , the reactive double bondsites are present only as terminalgroups that react during cure.

Thisleaves minimal residual reactive sitesthat would be subject to attack bycorrosive chemicals in service. Bycontrast, conventional polyester resinshave reactive double bond sites andester linkages throughout the molecularstructure. The resulting widespreadstructural vulnerability greatly reducescorrosion resistance compared to the premium-performing Vinyl Ester products. The VE8730 Novolac epoxy-based Vinyl esters comprise our premierofferings. They are specified forcorrosion resistant equipment requiringexposure to mixtures of chemicals, temperature and load cycling, solventexposure, and oxidation Resins are more capable thanbisphenol -A epichlorohydrin vinylesters in chlor-alkalai exposure, or inpaper processing. Therefore they arewidely used in tanks, washer covers, pipes, valves, ducting, etc.
