1 Philips Semiconductors Linear ProductsProduct specificationUC3842 Current-mode PWM controller1100 August 31, 1994853-0614 13721 DESCRIPTIONThe UC3842 is available in an 8-Pin mini-DIP the necessaryfeatures to implement off-line, fixed-frequency Current-mode controlschemes with a minimal external parts count. This technique resultsin improved line regulation, enhanced load response characteristics, and a simpler, easier to design control loop. Topological advantagesinclude inherent pulse-by-pulse current circuitry includes built-in undervoltage lock-out andcurrent limiting. Other features include fully-latched operation, a 1%trimmed bandgap reference, and start-up current less than devices feature a totem-pole output designed to source andsink high peak current from a capacitive load, such as the gate of apower MOSFET.
2 Consistent with N-channel power devices, theoutput is low in the Low start-up current ( 1mA) Automatic feed-forward compensation Pulse-by-pulse current limiting Enhanced load response characteristics Undervoltage lock-out with hysteresis Double pulse suppression High current totem-pole output Internally-trimmed bandgap reference 400kHz operation, guaranteed minPIN CONFIGURATIONSN PackageD Package123456781234567814131211109 COMPNCCOMPVFBISENSERT/CTVFBISENSERT/CTNC NCVREFVCCOUTPUTGROUNDNCVREFVCCOUTPUTGROU NDVCPOWER GROUNDTOP VIEWTOP VIEWAPPLICATIONS Off-line switched mode power supplies DC-to-DC converters UC3842 BLOCK DIAGRAMNOTE.

Timing and bypass capacitors should be connected close to Pin 5 in a single pointground.
9 The transistor and 5k potentiometer are used to sample the oscillator waveform and apply an adjustable ramp to Pin FSHUTDOWN TECHNIQUESNOTE:Shutdown of the UC3842 can be accomplished by two methods; either raise Pin 3 above 1V or pull Pin 1 below a voltage two diode drops above ground. Either method causes theoutput of the PWM comparator to be high (refer to Block Diagram). The PWM latch is reset dominant so that the output will remain low until the next clock cycle after the shutdowncondition at Pins 1 and/or 3 is removed. In the examples shown, an externally-latched shutdown may be accomplished by adding an SCR which will be reset by cyclingVCC below the lower UVLO threshold (10V).
10 At this point all internal bias is removed, allowing the SCR to CURRENTSHUTDOWNSENSE Semiconductors Linear ProductsProduct specificationUC3842 Current-mode PWM controllerAugust 31, 19941106 OFF-LINE FLYBACK (5V 2 5A)+ 220 F10 F4700 F470pFVFBVREFRT/CTVCCNOTES:T1: Coilcraft E-4140-BPrimary 97 turnssingle AWG24 Secondary 4 turns4 parallelAWG22control 9 turns 3 parallel AWG28 SPECIFICATIONSI nput line voltage:90 VAC to 130 VACI nput frequency:50 or 60 HzSwitching frequency:40kHz 10%Output power:25W maximumOutput voltage:5V 5%Output current :2 to 5 ALine regulation:8%/A*Efficiency @ 25 W,VIN=90 VAC:70%VIN=130 VAC:65%Output short-circuit averageNOTE:This circuit uses a low-cost feedback scheme in which the DCvoltage developed from the primary-side control winding is sensedby the UC3842 error amplifier.
