1 Page | 1 HANDMADE GOLD & GEMS-SET jewellery MASTER MAKER (HAND) curriculum / SYLLABUS This program is aimed at training candidates for the job of a Handmade Gold & Gems-Set jewellery Master Maker (Hand) in the Gem & jewellery Sector and aims at building the following key competencies amongst the learner. - Draw jewellery designs - Maintain IPR and respect copyright - Draw wire or strip from precious metal or alloy bar - Coordinate with co-workers - Make ball from precious metal or alloy - Maintain safe work environment - Stamp the gold sheet - Use embossing technique to make jewellery components from precious metals - Make gold chain - Paint with enamle colours on jewellery frame - Make the jewellery frame of gold or alloy - Make components, frame, Kundan (24KT gold) and silver foils - Set gemstones on jewellery frame - Set gemstones using Jadau technique and string This course encompasses 10 out of 14 National Occupational Standards (NOS) of Handmade Gold & Gems-Set jewellery Master Maker (Hand) Qualification Pack issued by Gem & jewellery Skill Council of India.

To know and understand how to anneal the wire for malleability. To know and understand how to control precious metal loss. To know and understand uses of different types of tools used in wire drawing. To know and understand heat treatments and intensity effect with respect to different types of gold alloys. G&J/N0601 3 Ball making 20 To know and understand how to draw sheets or strips of precious metal of required thickness based on the width and size of the ball to be made. To know and understand to assess the quantity of gold required to make the specified number of balls. To know and understand annealing the sheet for malleability and then quenching in water to cool. To know and understand to cut the sheet or strip as per the diameter of the ball. To know and understand to create two hemispheres of the ball and then lock the two hemispheres by heating.

To know and understand design or specifications to decide on the type of dies or moulds to be used. To know and understand the tolerances required for stamping. To know and understand anneal the sheet or strip for malleability and importance of repeating annealing process for every stage of drawing. To know and understand usage of die machine. To know and understand importance of cutting of any sharp edges and grind for smooth surface. To know and understand how to control precious metal loss. To know and understand anneal the sheet or strip for malleability and importance of repeating annealing process for every stage of drawing. To know and understand how to connect all the pieces of wire together to make the chain as per design using the weaving or soldering method as specified. To know and understand importance of cutting of any sharp edges and grind for smooth surface. To know and understand how to control precious metal loss. G&J/N0604 6 Frame making 20 To know and understand design specifications in terms of regional style applicable, types of alloy of gold, components and stones required; weight; entire jewellery making process flow, and delivery schedule. 6 To know and understand to roll or draw wire, sheet or strip from gold bar as per design requirement to make frame. To know and understand anneal the wire, sheet or strip for malleability and importance of repeating annealing process for every stage of drawing. To know and understand how to cut and saw wire or sheet to make the frame. To know and understand how to create designs by stamping, embossing, scraping, while keeping the symmetry of design intact. To know and understand how to lay the frames on wax or lac and set in Plaster of Paris (PoP) mixture or customised jigs. To know and understand how to solder components and frame to link frame pieces as per design. To know and understand how to clean completed frame with brush and water or chemical solution. To know and understand how to control precious metal loss. 7 Gemstone setting on frame 20 To know and understand different shapes, sizes and colour of gemstones.

7 To know and understand how to match stones in the bag with design. To know and understand different jewellery styles. To know and understand different types of stone cut styles such as cabochon (opaque gemstones usually) and faceted (transparent and diamond usually) in order to bezel into shallow or pronged groove or with side cuts in bezel. To know and understand different gemstones properties in terms of capacity to withstand pressure and heat. To know and understand different setting styles such as bezel/ collet setting, channel setting, prong setting, bead setting, burnish setting and Kundan-jadau setting, as well as closed and open setting. To know and understand how to achieve clean surface by removing all the wax and lac.

To know and understand how to file or cut sharp edges of prongs and grind for smooth surface and be careful not to over file. To know and understand how to achieve even colour of stones set, , no discolouration or breakage during setting.
