1 Dana Spicer . Drive Axles P/N: SHAIS177. Inspection and Repair Instructions for D170 Output Shaft Snap Ring Affected Models: Dana's D170 drive axles built between May 31, 2006 and June 15, 2006. Background: This document will explain the proper procedure for inspecting and repairing vehicles that are found to be suspect of having a mis-machined output shaft snap ring groove. It is important that the inspection procedure be carefully followed to determine if a repair is necessary. If the axle has been inspected and a repair is not necessary, Dana service parts kit # 514353 should be used to reassemble the output shaft assembly. If an axle has been identified as needing to be repaired, a spacer will be placed between the two output shaft bearing cones. Dana service parts kit # 514352 will be used to complete the repair. Axle Housing Inspection Procedure: 1. Block the wheels of the steer axle front and rear. 2. Disconnect the inter-axle driveline at the output yoke position. 3. Remove the output shaft flanged nut. 4. Remove the output yoke using appropriate puller. 5. Remove the output shaft oil seal. 6. Remove output shaft snap ring. 7. Being careful not to damage the bearing cup or cone, use a bearing cup driver to totally seat the outer 1. bearing cup. **It is important that the cup is seated so that there is no endplay in the shaft. 8. Use the photograph below to determine if a spacer will need to be added between the bearing cones. A. If there is less than .015 space between the top of the outer bearing cup and the bottom of the snap ring groove, you will NOT have to repair this vehicle.
3 Use service parts kit # 514353. Reinstall the snap ring, install a new seal, reinstall the output yoke, install a new output nut and torque to 800 1000 ft. lbs. (1084 1355 ). Bottom of Groove .008 - .015 . Top of Cup Good Snap Ring Position No Repair Needed B. If the space is .080 to .090 from the top of the output bearing cup to the bottom of the snap ring groove you will have to add the spacer between the bearing cones. Use service parts kit 514352. Carefully follow the repair procedure below. Bottom of Groove .080 - .090 . Top of Cup Bad Snap Ring Position Add New Spacer Between Cups Repair Procedure: Now that you have identified that a bearing spacer needs to be installed between the bearing cones you can continue to disassemble the output shaft assembly. 1. Remove the output shaft and outer bearing cup. Tip: It may be helpful to loosely reinstall the yoke and output nut giving the technician more of an area to grip when removing the output shaft.
4 2. Remove the inner bearing cup from inside the axle housing. With a press, remove both the inner and outer bearing cones. 3. Install a new inner bearing cone on to the output shaft so that the large end is facing towards the threaded end of the shaft, Install bearing spacer part number 131697. The spacer will be positioned between the bearing cones. Now install the outer bearing cone so that the large end is facing down, the large ends of the bearings should be back to back. Using a press and sleeve, press the bearings and space until the inner bearing race is fully seated against the shoulder of the shaft. Be careful not to 2. damage the bearing cages during the pressing operation. Shoulde Shoulde Spac Assemble Bearing Cones and New Spacer Press Bearings & Spacer to Shoulder 4. Install the new inner bearing cup into the housing. 5. Apply thin layer of lubricant to the bearing rollers then install the output shaft assembly into the housing.
5 6. Install the outer bearing cup, make sure it is fully sealed against the bearing cone. 7. Install the new snap ring. 8. Measure output shaft endplay should be .001 and .025 . 9. Install new oil seal using Dana seal driver part number 131471. 10. Reinstall output yoke. 11. Install new output shaft nut and torque to 800 1000 ft. lbs. (1084 1355 ). 12. Reinstall inter-axle driveline. See chart below for proper torque specification. For spec'ing or service assistance, call 1-800-826-HELP (4357) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, (Mexico: 8-332-1515).
