1 Developmental Milestones year One Directions: Use these handy charts to assess a child s Developmental progress. Be sure to observe the child for cues that he is achieving the Milestones appropriate for his age. Ask the caregiver questions related to the child s progress in achieving Milestones . But remember, children attain Milestones at different ages. These highlights are meant only as general guidelines. 0-3 Months Development Milestones Developmental Category Focuses on and follows moving objects, including human faces. Distinguishes hue and brightness of color, pitch and volume of sound, and discriminates between sweet, sour, bitter, and salty tastes. Begins to anticipate events (for example, sucking at the sight of a nipple). Cognitive Responds to speech by looking at the speaker. Communicates hunger, fear, discomfort, and joy through crying, facial expressions, babbling, and laughing.

2 Attempts to imitate sounds. Language Usually quiets down at the sound of a soothing voice or when held. Benefits from short, frequent interactions more than long, infrequent ones. Smiles and shows pleasure in response to social stimulation. Social Lifts head and chest when lying on his stomach. Holds head up for a few seconds, when supported. Reacts to and imitates the facial expressions of others. Responds to familiar sounds. Cognitive Exchanges sounds, facial expressions, or gestures with a parent or caregiver.

3 Listens to conversations. Repeats some vowel and consonant sounds. Language Knows familiar faces. Smiles spontaneously and laughs aloud. Plays peek-a-boo. Begins to understand the concept of separation. Social Pulls up to a sitting position if there is something to hold on to such as the edge of a crib or someone s hands. Fine Motor Developmental Milestones year One 6-12 Months Development Milestones Developmental Category Explores objects in many different ways (shaking, banging, throwing, dropping). Tries to accomplish simple goals (seeing and then crawling to a toy). Imitates gestures and actions during play.

4 Looks for an object that was seen disappearing (such as a toy being covered by a blanket). Cognitive Begins repetitive babbling. Associates gestures with simple words and two-word phrases, like hi and bye-bye. Says a few words. Understands simple commands such as no. Language Prefers mother and/or regular caregiver to all others and cries when he or she leaves Shows apprehension about strangers. Imitates people during play. Laughs at silly actions (as in wearing a bowl as a hat). Looks for objects that are out of sight. Puts a round lid on a round pot. Follows simple 1-step directions. Solves problems by trial and error. Cognitive Says 8-10 words you can understand. Looks at a person who is talking to him. Uses "hi," "bye," and "please," with reminders. Asks for something by pointing or by using one word. Directs another's attention to an object or action. Acts out a familiar activity in play (as in pretending to take a bath). Language Plays alone on the floor with toys. Competes with other children for toys. Recognizes herself in the mirror or in pictures.

Explores surroundings. Begins to match similar objects. Points to 5-6 parts of a doll when asked. Cognitive Has a vocabulary of several hundred words. Uses 2-3 word sentences. Says names of toys. Asks for information about an object (asks, "Shoe?)

Remembers what happened yesterday. Knows what is food and what is not food. Knows some numbers (but not always in the right order). Knows where things usually belong. Understands what "1" is. Understands "now," "soon," and "later". Substitutes one object for another in pretend play (as in pretending a block is a "car"). Laughs at silly ideas (like "milking" a dog). Looks through a book alone. Matches circles and squares. Matches an object to a picture of that object. Matches objects that have same function (as in putting a cup and plate together).
