A deficiency determined during APE I and still presentduring APE II was the loss of power to primary attitude and heading gyros whenpropeller speed was less than 2000 rpm. It was not possible to duplicate theconditions under wldcn the deficiency of smoke in the cockpit and cabin areasat altitudes above 15,000 feet pressure altitude (determined during APE I) ,wasnoted; therefore, it was impossible to determine whether or not the contractormodifications eliminated this deficiency.
6 Four previously determined shortcomingsremained uncorrected. In June 1971, a contract was initiated by the United States Army AviationSystermn- Command (AVSCOM) with Beech Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for theprocurement of three modified KingAir model AI00 (U-2IF) aircraft. Theseaircraft were to be utilized by the United States Army Security Agency as researchand development test-bed aircraft in support of classified CEFLY LANCER missionrequirements. The original centract was modified in June 1973 to permit theprocurement of three "T"-tailed model 200 aircraft in lieu of the modified U-21 aircraft are currently being type certificated in the normal cat.
