1 zonyl MP 1100 Technical InformationfluoroadditiveZonyl is a registered trademark of MP 1100 fluoroadditive is a white free-flowing PTFE powder designed for use as anadditive in other materials to impart low-surfaceenergy and other fluoropolymer attributes. Inparticular, it has been found well suited for usein inks and coatings where a narrow particle sizedistribution is desired. With plastics and elastomers,it provides improved lubricity and wear to lubricants, it can enhance performanceunder severe conditions. zonyl MP 1100 can beused at temperatures from 190 to 250 C ( 310to 480 F). zonyl MP 1100 is generally intended to be usedas an additive, although it can also be used aloneas a dry lubricant. Its properties (see Table 1),including a relatively low molecular weight, makethis material unsuitable as a molding or extrusionresin.

It is a good electricalinsulator, does not absorb water, and is highlyresistant to MP 1100 tends to form clumps of particles,but it can be deagglomerated during mixing andblending operations. Agglomerates of the resin arefriable a characteristic that helps in producing anintimate mixture with host materials, which alsomeans that the particle size distribution measuredfor the resin is dependent on the measuring methodused.

3 As made, the resin comprises of loose 150 magglomerates of m particles. As the resin isdispersed in a solvent for particle size measurement,the agglomerates break down and could eventuallyapproach the m particle ApplicationsZonyl MP 1100 is used as an additive (at approxi-mately 1 3% by weight) in the preparation of offset,gravure, and flexographic printing inks. It improvescertain properties, such as rub resistance, slip,surface smoothness, and gloss. In addition, block-ing can also be reduced. Typically, zonyl MP1100 is used in combination with polyethylenewaxes to obtain the desired degree of propertymodification. Due to its small particle size andnarrow particle size distribution, zonyl MP 1100has been found useful in a variety of coatingsystems.
