1 Engineer Licensing Requirements by State Engineer Licensing Regulations by State National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). 1. Engineer Licensing Requirements by State It is not required to obtain a license to become an Engineer ; however, some positions may require a Professional Engineer , PE, designation. 2 The PE exam is designed to test for a minimum level of competency in a particular engineering discipline. It is designed for engineers who have gained a minimum of four years of work experience in their chosen engineering discipline. 3 The following shall be considered as minimum evidence satisfactory to the board that the applicant is qualified for licensure as a professional Engineer : Graduation and experience plus examination. A graduate of an approved engineering curriculum of four years or more from a school or college approved by the board who has successfully passed a board approved examination in the fundamental engineering subjects and who has a specific record of an additional four years or more of progressive experience in engineering work of a grade and character satisfactory to the board shall be admitted to a board approved examination in the principles and practice of engineering.

4 Upon passing this examination, the applicant shall be granted a certificate of licensure to practice engineering in this State , provided the applicant is otherwise qualified Comity The board may, upon application, issue a certificate of licensure as a professional Engineer to any person who holds a valid professional engineering certificate issued by any jurisdiction of the United States or of any country; provided, that the education, experience, and examination qualifications of the applicant are, in the judgment of the board, of a standard not lower than that specified in the applicable licensure act in effect in Alabama at the time such certificate was issued.

An applicant with a foreign degree shall submit a transcript of the applicant's education and if the transcript is not in English, submit a translation into English and a signed and notarized affidavit by the translator of the accuracy of the translation; and an evaluation of the applicant's education from an agency approved by the board unless the applicant's education has been earned at a school accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by the board.

7 The minimum work experience required for registration must include o two years of responsible charge experience or successful completion of a four- year responsible charge mentoring system, as defined in 12 AAC and this section. To receive full credit for responsible charge experience, an applicant must gain responsible charge experience while under the responsible control of a professional Engineer registered in the United States in the branch of engineering for which the applicant has applied. If the Board has not received an application from you and approved you to sit for a national examination, you will not be authorized to take a NCEES examination Auto-approval through NCEES: This option is only available to applicants with an ABET. accredited bachelor's degree or an ABET accredited master's degree. Not all Engineer degrees are ABET accredited. Refer to to determine if your degree is ABET accredited. If it is, you may register directly with NCEES to take the national exams.
