These Exemplar answers should also be read in conjunction with the sample assessment materials and the June 2017 Examiners Report to Centres available on the OCR website qualifications/. The question paper, mark scheme and any resource booklet(s) will be available on the OCR website from summer 2018. Until then, they are available on OCR Interchange (school exams officers will have a login for this). It is important to note that approaches to question setting and marking will remain consistent. At the same time OCR reviews all its qualifications annually and may make small adjustments to improve the performance of its assessments. We will let you know of any substantive Candidate Work4A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 With reference to the Source(s), explain why globalisation is a difficult concept to define. [9]9/9 (Full marks) (AO1= 5/5; AO2= 4/4)Section AQuestion 1 Exemplar Candidate Work5A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryTwo clear points, both linked well to Source A and then clearly developed using additional evidence.

More than enough for full Candidate Work6A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 20178/9 marks (AO1 4/5; AO2 4/4)Examiner commentaryThe sources were referred to twice explicitly and a couple more times implicitly. So full marks for AO2. Good understanding of some of the issues were shown, but the points made were not fully developed/ explained to demonstrate excellent understanding, required for level 4 AO1. There was a point about Americanisation, and a point that not all experience it in the same way, but neither were fully Candidate Work7A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 20174/9 marks (AO1 2/5; AO2 2/4)Examiner commentaryOne underdeveloped point about changing over time, not fully explained, so level 2. Two explicit references to Source A in relation to this, but no development, and second reference social, political and economic just recycled, so therefore this is a level 2 for Candidate Work8A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Question 2 With reference to the Source(s), to what extent have developments in digital forms of communication had a negative impact on identity?

[10]10/10 (Full marks) (AO1= 4/4; AO2= 2/2; AO3= 3/3) Exemplar Candidate Work9A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryTwo developed knowledge points firstly linking to the source and fragmented identities, developed using Ellison and the idea of multiple personalities, and then later using the point from the source about old posts being difficult to removed, developed using Case. Enough for full marks for AO1 and AO2. One well-developed evaluation point, therefore level 3 For AO3 would need another point or a more developed, critical conclusion to access level Candidate Work10A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 20177/10 marks (AO1 3/4 AO2 2/2 AO3 2/4)Examiner commentaryOne developed knowledge point referring to Case and online vs offline identity, which was linked to the potential negative impact on identity, implying unfavourable comparisons to others. Another point would be needed to reach level 4 for AO1. One underdeveloped evaluation point referring to postmodernists and autobiography, but not really clear on how this has a positive impact on identity, so level 2 for AO3.

More development/explanation would gain level 3, but a second point would be needed for level 4. Explicit reference to source B at the beginning, leading on to the positive impact on identity is enough to gain the 2 marks available for Candidate Work11A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 20175/10 marks (AO1 3/4; AO2 2/2; AO3 0/4) Exemplar Candidate Work12A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryOne developed knowledge point referring to Case and online vs offline identity, which was linked to the potential negative impact on identity, implying unfavourable comparisons to others. Explicit reference to source B at the beginning, leading on to the positive impact on identity is enough to gain the 2 marks available for Candidate Work13A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Question 3 Evaluate the view that global advances in digital forms of communication have had a positive impact on relationships.

[16]15/16 marks (AO1 4/4; AO2 4/4; AO3 7/8) Exemplar Candidate Work14A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work15A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work16A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryGood range of developed knowledge on the positive impact on relationships, using McLuhan s Global village effectively, and a developed conceptual point relating to social networks, social capital and weak ties (even though Granovetter was misspelt). Two developed points is enough for level 4 for AO1, and they were well focused, gaining level 4 for AO2 as well. Evaluation was sustained, with each point being specifically challenged, and an additional argument made using Marxist ideas. Three developed evaluation points are required for level 4, and this response just makes Candidate Work17A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 201710/16 marks (AO1 - 3/4 AO2- 3/ 4; AO3 - 4/8 Exemplar Candidate Work18A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryTwo points made in support of the positive impact on relationships, though the Carter point was slightly confusing the idea of a global village with a virtual community, and both points needed a bit more explanation, hence level 3 for AO1 and AO2.)

Two evaluative points were made, the second was developed more than the first response is a level 2 for Candidate Work19A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 20175/16 marks (AO1 - 3/4; AO2 - 2/4; AO3 - 0/8)Examiner commentaryTwo underdeveloped points were made in relation to the question for AO1, just enough for level 3 (borderline level 2 response, but first point on status was slightly better). AO2: Lacking enough evidence or explicit focus, level 2. No evaluation, so no marks for Candidate Work20A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017In what ways can crime and deviance be described as relative ? [10]10/10 marks (full marks) (AO1 6/6; A02 4/4)Section BOption 1 - Question 4 Exemplar Candidate Work21A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryThree developed points, using situation, time and culture, all with supporting examples, demonstrating understanding and applied to the question. Just enough for full Candidate Work22A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 201710/10 marks (AO1 6/6 AO2 4/4) Exemplar Candidate Work23A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryA well-structured response which clearly shows understanding of the idea of crime and deviance being relative, and used three developed points to explain this, supporting each with specific examples.

A clear full marker. Note that in future years, more substantiation of points with studies/ concepts/ theories may be expected for a 10 mark question in Section B, but this particular question lent itself more to examples, so if these were well explained and applied, as with this response, this was fully Candidate Work24A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 20174/10 marks (A01 = 2/6; A02 = 2/4)Examiner commentaryA very brief response, but it demonstrates some understanding of the idea of crime being relative with reference to relativity over time level 2 relevant point but Candidate Work25A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017To what extent are left wing social policies an effective way of reducing crime in society? [20]20/20 marks full marks (AO1 8/8; AO2 4/4; AO3 8/8)Option 1 - Question 5 Exemplar Candidate Work26A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work27A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work28A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryA range of left wing policies were explained and linked to their effectiveness, including restorative justice, multi-agency working and minimal policing, showing a clear understanding of the left wing approach and how such policies could work.

Evaluation was sustained and well-focused on challenging the effectiveness of these policies, with a reflective conclusion. A clear full mark Candidate Work29A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 201715/20 marks (AO1 6/8; AO2 3/4; AO3 6/8) Exemplar Candidate Work30A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work31A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryShowing understanding of the long-term nature of left wing policies, and referring to rehabilitation, restorative justice and policing issues. Missing the focus on how these policies would be effective in reducing crime at times and slightly underdeveloped, so level 3 for AO1 and AO2. One explicit criticism, and then Right wing policies were contrasted, but there was a tendency towards juxtaposition, rather than using these to challenge the effectiveness of the left wing policies, which prevented the response from reaching level 4 for Candidate Work32A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 201711/20 marks (AO1 6/8 A02 = 2/4 AO3 2/8) Exemplar Candidate Work33A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work34A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryOne developed point on reintegrative as opposed to disintegrative shaming and why the former would be favoured over the latter.

Then a range of other briefer policies, such as reasons why harsh punishments do not work and increasing the minimum wage. So this has some range and some depth level 3 for AO1 and AO2. There is a lack of evaluation - there is a tangential statement on Wilson but this is possibly being presented as a left wing idea and is therefore unclear, and a brief Marxist criticism which lacks focus on the question. Therefore, this is only limited (level 1) for Candidate Work35A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Assess sociological explanations for gender differences in patterns of crime . [40]38/40 (AO1 16/16; AO3 8/8; AO3 14/16)Option 1 - Question 6 Exemplar Candidate Work36A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work37A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work38A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Exemplar Candidate Work39A Level SOCIOLOGY OCR 2017 Examiner commentaryExtremely wide-ranging in terms of evidence to explain gender differences. The nature of this question caused some candidates to neglect evaluation, and just present a range of explanations.
