1 Ontario Fire Service Section 21 Advisory Committee Ministry of Labour Minist re du Travail Hazardous Fire Conditions Rollover, Flashover and Backdraft Effective: March 2001 Revised: February 2016 Page 1 of 1 FIRE FIGHTERS GUIDANCE NOTE # 7-6 ISSUE: HAZARDOUS FIRE CONDITIONS - ROLLOVER, FLASHOVER AND BACKDRAFT The keys to surviving a fire ground emergency are prevention and training. Employers are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), clause 25(2)(a), to provide information, instruction, and supervision to protect the health or safety of workers. Where workers are exposed to hazards such as flashover, rollover, or backdraft employers need to provide their personnel with the appropriate information, instruction, and supervision to ensure that firefighters understand the various hazardous fire conditions to which they may be exposed, as well as the controls required for them to protect their health or safety.

2 The following key elements should be included in a training program on hazardous fire conditions: Recognizing the signs of impending rollover, flashover and backdraft Methods to safely reduce or eliminate the chance of the hazard occurring Understanding and recognizing different types of building construction Understanding the limitations of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Emergency procedures Reference: GN # 6-6 Rapid Fire Progression GN # 6-11 Rapid Intervention Teams (Rescue) GN # 7-4 Firefighter Survival and Self-rescue Training GN # 7-5 Live Fire Training Considerations for Acquired Structures
