Copying and networking of an American National Standard requires review by ANSI that therequirements for due process, consensus, and other criteria for approval havebeen met by the standards is established when, in the judgment of the ANSI Board of StandardsReview, substantial agreement has been reached by directly and materiallyaffected interests.

Substantial agreement means much more than a simplemajority, but not necessarily unanimity. Consensus requires that all views andobjections be considered, and that a concerted effort be made toward use of American National Standards is completely voluntary; their existencedoes not in any respect preclude anyone, whether he has approved the standardsor not, from manufacturing, marketing, purchasing, or using products, processes,or procedures not conforming to the American National Standards Institute does not develop standards and will inno circumstances give an interpretation of any American National , no person shall have the right or authority to issue an interpretation ofan American National Standard in the name of the American National StandardsInstitute.

Requests for interpretations should be addressed to the secretariat orsponsor whose name appears on the title page of this NOTICE: This American National Standard may be revised orwithdrawn at any time. The procedures of the American National StandardsInstitute require that action be taken periodically to reaffirm, revise, or withdrawthis standard. Copying and networking @ Revision of ANSI American National Standard for Information Systems - Coded Character sets - 70 Bit American National Standard Code for Information Interchange (70 Bit ASCII) Secretariat Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturers Association Approved American National Standards Institute, Inc Licensed to Christopher Osburn. ANSI order X_61351. Downloaded 5/15/2008 3:15 PM. Single user license only. Copying and networking (This F&word is not part of American National Standard ) This American National Standard presents the standard Coded Character set to be used for Information interchange among Information processing Systems , communication Systems , and associated equipment.

Other standards prescribe the means of implementing this standard in media, such as per- forated tape, punched cards, magnetic tape, magnetic tape cassette and cartridges, and optical Character recognition. Further standards deal with error control, data communi- cation formats, keyboards, graphic representation of control characters, code extension techniques, and media labels and file structures. The 7-bit Coded Character set was developed from a careful review of past work in the field and after a comprehensive program of original research and code design was com- pleted.

Careful consideration has been given to the several conflicting requirements for code sets and their resolution is reflected in the standard code. This standard is a revision of American National Standard Code for Information Inter- change, ANSI 977, and was developed in parallel with its international counterpart, Informational Processing - IS0 7-Bit Coded Character Set for Information Interchange, IS0 646-1983. This current revision retains the same technical relationship to IS0 646- 1983 as the earlier edition. The text of this revision is quite close to that of IS0 646- 1983.

Changes were made to adopt more customary terminology and to reduce ambiguity. A conformance section has been added to aid users in building compatible equipment. The relationship with American National Standard Code Extension Tech- niques for Use with the 7-Bit Coded Character Set of American National Standard Code for Information Interchange, ANSI , has also been included. Suggestions for improvement of this standard will be welcome. They should be sent to the Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturers Association, 311 First Street, NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20001.

This standard was processed and approved for submittal to ANSI by American Na- tional Standards Committee on Information Processing Systems , X3. Committee approval of the standard does not necessarily mean that all committee members voted for its approval. At the time it approved this standard, the X3 Committee had the fol- lowing members: Edward Lohse, Chair Richard Gibson, Vice-Chair Catherine A. Kachurik, Administrative Secretary Organization Represented American Express.. American Library Association.. American Nuclear Society.. AMP Incorporated .. Association for Computing Machinery.
