There are many forces that lead people to move betweencountries, including voluntary migration, in which individuals make deliberate choic-es to seek out new ways of living. In contrast, involuntary migration describes theplight of individuals and families who are displaced from their home countries, oftendue to tumultuous conditions such as war, environmental conditions, or oppressivesocial and political practices .

The circumstances that lead people to migrate mightbetter be framed as a continuum of choice, because there are rarely entirely positivecircumstances and ideal conditions. Regardless of the circumstances, immigrants andrefugees face many issues of adjustment in a new country and the integration processis a major concern for the delivery of professional GUIDANCE and COUNSELLING Theoretical Foundations and Best Practic-es in Europe provides readers with many windows from which to examine migration inthe growing multicultural context. The overriding goal of this collection is to providereaders with theoretical frameworks and practical strategies for implementing guidanceand COUNSELLING with people who are attempting to integrate into European of the authors address issues of globalisation from the perspective of humancapital, reminding readers that globalisation is more than about products and services;globalisation is primarily about people.

Readers are informed about the many adjust-ment issues that individuals face in entering educational environments and breakinginto employment markets. A key window that is open refers to integration as a proc-ess of mutual adaptation between migrants and the host and COUNSELLING roles are evolving to meet the needs of individuals whocross cultures. There are many challenges posed in preparing migrants, in preparingprofessionals, and in preparing educational and employment settings for the socialinclusion of immigrants. However, the authors move the discussion from a problemfocus to strategies for supporting individuals and for improving policies, programmesand services. The framework of multicultural COUNSELLING taken in the book providesForewordNancy Arthur6 Nancy Arthurreaders with complimentary models and practical applications for working with indi-viduals who are culturally light of global trends for mobility, readers will find it informative to read aboutmulticultural COUNSELLING and GUIDANCE in a European context.

As borders of trade, travel, and employment shift throughout the world, professionals need to be reflec-tive about their own practices and ways to enhance their multicultural also need to look outside of familiar contexts to better understand how theoryand applications from other countries apply to local policies and practices . Multicul-tural GUIDANCE and COUNSELLING Theoretical Foundations and Best practices in Europeis a welcome addition to the professional literature. There are many unique contribu-tions that can be used to inform the design and delivery of professional serviceswithin the European context and in other countries. The book also offers a windowto the future where the collaboration of professionals from various sectors and be-tween countries will be a critical force for impacting social Arthur, of CalgaryCanada7 PrefaceMika Launikari & Sauli PuukariEurope is today ethnically, religiously, linguistically and culturally a complex reality.

Itis home to millions of people from non-European backgrounds with connectionsand cultural influences from around the world. Therefore, an understanding of dif-ferent cultures and how to communicate across them will be a great asset to all guid-ance counsellors working with diverse minority populations in Europe in the professional publications on multicultural GUIDANCE and COUNSELLING havebeen published in the United States and Canada, two countries with long traditionsof migration and cultural diversity. Although multiculturalism is not a new phenome-non in Europe either, this is the first time ever that an initiative has been taken toproduce a European handbook addressing multicultural GUIDANCE and counsellingfrom theoretical and practical perspectives.
