Guidance for the Blessing of Throats on the Feast of St. Blaise Feb. 3, 2022. For those parishes or schools offering the Blessing of Throats , it may be done during Mass, or in a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word, or during Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer. The traditional date to offer this Blessing is on the Feast of St. Blaise; however, it is also acceptable to offer it on the Sunday before or after the Feast day. It may be led by a priest, deacon, or lay minister, following the rites and prayers in chapter 51 of the Book of Blessings (paragraphs 1622 and following). If the Blessing is conferred during Mass, the Blessing follows the homily and the general intercessions, or, for pastoral reasons, the prayer of Blessing may take the place of the final Blessing of the Mass. (Book of Blessings, no. 1626). This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, please do not touch the persons with candles. Instead, give the Blessing without the candles, extending hands over the assembly and saying the Blessing as prescribed in the Book of Blessings.
