PRE COLONOSCOPY DIET Two days before your test please follow a low residue diet, which consists of the following: Fats (use sparingly) - Butter or margarine Rice - Plain boiled white rice Eggs - Boiled or poached Meat/Fish - Mince or well cooked, tender, lean beef, lamb, ham, veal, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish Cheese - Cream, cottage or ...

2 This can beuncomfortable as bends in the colon are negotiated and airis used to inflate the colon. The Colonoscope is connectedto a television system where pictures can be seen. In orderfor the test to be successful, it is important that you takethe Moviprep bowel preparation as directed. This will assistin cleaning your bowel, enabling us to make a examining your bowel the cause of your symptoms maybe found. Sometimes we are able to treat them there andthen. Pictures and biopsies (samples) may be taken andsometimes polyps (small growths in the bowel) can beremoved or other treatments Colonoscopy is a safe examination but rarely, acomplication such as bleeding or perforation may occur (1in 1500, or if polyps removed 1 in 200).

3 Other risks arediscomfort, bloating and pain. Entonox (gas and air) maycause nausea, dizziness and euphoria. Sedation may causenausea and vomiting, you could become over sedatedwhich may reduce your breathing effort and you could alsohave a prolonged sedative TREATMENTSThe alternative to a Colonoscopy is a barium enema. This isa type of xray which does not include any treatment and itcannot provide biopsies. Therefore, you may still need tohave a Colonoscopy at a later date. 4 Your appointment time takes into account the timerequired to admit you onto the unit. You shouldtherefore not expect to immediately go through for thetest when called. You should expect to be with us forabout 3 - 4 hours. Please note we usually have 4 differentlists running consecutively, this may mean some peoplewill have to wait longer than others, even with the sameappointment time. Please note that the time of day that you will need tostart taking the Moviprep solution differs between amorning and an afternoon appointment. Please followthe instructions carefully.

5 WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAYB efore the procedure a nurse will take you into a roomand explain the test and ask you some questions. You will be asked to sign a consent form and changeclothing. You will be taken to a trolley where you may also placeyour belongings. When it is your turn you will be takento another room for your test. Page 3 Colonoscopy WITH ENTONOXIf you are Having Entonox (gas and air) instructions willbe given on how to self administer this before yourcolonoscopy starts. Entonox is inhaled through a mouthpiece to relieve pain.

6 A cannula (small plastic tube) will be inserted just in caseany medication is needed during your Colonoscopy . After the procedure you will be transferred to ourrecovery area for about half an hour where you will begiven a drink and some biscuits. Recovery from the effects of Entonox is rapid and youwill be able to drive after half an hour from stoppingEntonox use providing you have had a straight forwardColonoscopy. You may feel bloated with wind-like discomfort. This isnormal and usually settles quickly. If you have a biopsytaken or a polyp removed it is normal to pass small spotsof blood from your bottom for a day or two followingthe procedure.

7 You will be given the results of your test before yourdischarge. If biopsies have been taken these results willbe given at a later date. Page 4 Colonoscopy WITH SEDATIONIf you are Having sedation a small cannula will be placedin your arm to enable us to give you medication for thetest. In the endoscopy room a sedative and pain relief isgiven through the cannula. This is not an anaesthetic. Itwill relax you but you will be aware of what is going sedative may cause loss of memory and judgment forup to 24 hours following the test. After your procedure you will be transferred to ourrecovery area for about one hour to rest.

8 If you have had a sedative you will not be able to drive,drink alcohol, operate machinery or sign legal documentsfor 24 hours following your will need someoneto accompany you home and to be with you overnightfollowing your procedure as the effects of the sedationare still in your system. You may feel bloated with wind-like discomfort. This isnormal and usually settles quickly. If you have a biopsytaken or a polyp removed it is normal to pass small spotsof blood from your bottom for a day or two followingthe procedure. You will be given the results of your test before yourdischarge.

9 If biopsies have been taken these results willbe given at a later date. Please leave all valuables and jewellery at homewhere possible as we are unable to look after these 5 Moviprep INFORMATIONIn order to examine the whole of the bowel it must beclear of all waste materials. This is achieved by using acombination of changing what you eat and taking works by giving you diarrhoea. This is unpleasantbut necessary and may last up until the time of yourappointment. Easy access to your toilet will be required formost of the might like to use a barrier cream to prevent a sorebottom'.

10 A product such as petroleum jelly can be days before your Colonoscopy appointment please stoptaking iron days before your Colonoscopy appointment please stoptaking medication that may constipate you Codeine,cophenotrope (eg Lomotil), loperamide (eg Imodium) andKaolin & other medication. If you are taking othermedication, please take it at least one hour before or atleast one hour after taking Moviprep , otherwise they maybe flushed through your digestive system and not work 6DO NOT TAKE Moviprep IFYou are allergic to any of the ingredients You are pregnant You are on dialysis You are taking medication for an organ transplant Youhave not passed wind or opened your bowels in the lastfive days leading up to your bowel preparation time.
