High Performance Tanking Membrane System

DESCRIPTIONBITUMAT BITUTHENE 1000X HC is a technicallyadvanced cold applied, flexible, preformedwaterproof Membrane comprising a strong, highdensity, multi-layer polyethylene film with superiorphysica l properti es and a thick elasticself-adhesive rubber/bitumen compound. Theadvancedcarrier film is manufactured by crosslaminating and chemically bonding the layerstogether, to produce a film with increaseddimensional stability, four times the tear strengthand puncture resistance, and twice the impactresistance of traditional low density polyethylenefilms. The Membrane has been designed andspecially formulated to withstand the higherambient temperatures encountered in used in conjunction with Servicisedwaterstops cast into the concrete shell, it willprovide a high Performance , chemically resistantand fully continuous waterproofing / tankingsystem for basements and sub-structures.

It issupplied to site in rolls thick x 1m wide x20m long (20 sq meters) and is unrolled stickyside down on to concrete blinding or concreteslabs, or bonded to primed vertical concrete is achieved by overlapping adjacentrolls by 50mm and firmly rolling. Being factorymade, the thickness of Membrane is constantthroughout and is not subjected to variation bysite labour as occurs with brush appliedmembranes. Bituthene 1000X HC is extremelyflexible with typically 200% elongation and iscapable of bridging shrinkage cracks in theconcrete and will accommodate minor settlementduring the service life of the membranes should never be takenthrough load bearing brick / blockwork walls andmust be linked with the damp proof course toprevent extrusion under of ConcreteBackgroundThe arid desert conditions in the Middle East, combined with high temperatures and humidityencountered in coastal regions require specialprecautionary measures to be taken in placinggood durable concrete.

The excessive heat anddrying winds cause plastic shrinkage crackingunless mixes are carefully designed and propercuring techniques are adopted. The highconcentrations of salts present in water, ground, atmosphere and aggregates cause chemicalreactions to take place in the concrete whichrapidly lead to its decomposition. The extremesof temperature and humidity accelerate thechemical attack and physical Salt AttackIn the coastal flats and many desert areas, theground water table is very near to the surface andsalts may exist eithe r in solution in thegroundwater, or in the form of salt crusts on thesurface. The salts which consist mainly ofsulphates, chlorides or carbonates of calcium, magnesium and sodium, attack the concreteexternally both below and up to a metre aboveground level.

The calcium aluminium hydrate inhardened concrete reacts with sulphate salts toproduce calcium sulpho-aluminate crystals withinthe framework of the hydrated paste. As thesecrystals have a volume 227% greater than theoriginal calcium aluminium hydrate crystals, theconcrete cracks and deteriorates. A similarreaction occurs between magnesium sulphate andthe calcium hydroxide of the cement paste: thisyields crystals of gypsum with an increase involume of 124%.Salt-Laden MoistureSalt weathering occurs when humid air cools andsalt-laden moisture condenses on the concreteand into the cracks and pores where the solutioncrystallizes. The extreme temperature cycles anddrying winds create volumetric changes in thecrystals and consequent expansive forces causecracking and spalling with rapid deterioration.

Anyadditional moisture, from a heavy dew the salt. and the subsequentrecrystallization will maintain this expansion /contraction ConceptOur waterproofing recommendations are based onthe design concept that all reinforced concretestructures at or below ground in the Middle Eastrequire special design considerations to overcomelocal geological difficulties, and that external attackcan be prevented by protecting the whole of thebelow ground works with a continuous layer ofBituthene 1000X HC, which is impervious andvapour 1000X HCHigh Performance Tanking Membrane SystemRoll length: 20 metreRoll width: 1 metre (20 sq m)Thickness: overallWeight per roll : 32 kg grossMinimum overlaps 50mm side and endRecommended application 4 C to 55 Ctemperature (see notes below)Storage: Store upright in dry conditions below 40 CEquipment by OthersSoft broom, Stanley knife, brush or roller forpriming, stiff broom and airline for should be taken to ensure that allsurfaces are free from ice.

Frost or blinding under base slab should besurface dry, free from standing water, and laid toa regular surface free from sharp protrusions andhollows. Horizontal surfaces under base slabs donot usually require priming before applying faces shall be smooth, regular, dry andfree from nails and primed with one coat ofServicised B Primer HC applied by brush or roller,at a rate of 10-12 sq m/litre depending on theporosity of the surface, and allowed to completelydry before the application of the Bituthene 1000 XHC. Brickwork shall be flush pointed or renderedto provide a smooth surface before 1000X HC shall be laid by peeling backthe protective release paper and applying theadhesive face on to the prepared surface.

Thematerial should be brushed on to the surface toensure good initial bond. Adjacent rolls are alignedand overlapped 50mm minimum at side and endsand well rolled with a firm pressure using aServicised Lap Roller to ensure complete adhesionand continuity between the 1000X to extend 300mm beyond line ofretaining walls to allow continuity with the verticalapplication. Anypunctures or damaged areasshould be cleaned and patched using Bituthene1000X with 50mm laps all the application care should be taken toprevent damage by following trades by using a25mm screed as horizontal protection or Servipakboards spot bonded with Pak Adhesive. Verticalfaces to be protected if required againstdamagefrom backfilling and fixing of reinforcementby using Korkpak, Servipak or other boardsrecommended by Servicised Ltd.

Spot bonded withPak PrecautionsBituthene 1000X HC has no health hazard whenused in accordance with our standard B Primer HC is flammable with a FlashPoint 25 C-30 C and should be used in wellventilated areas away from sources of should be avoided and undried materialprevented from coming into contact with skin. Theuse of protective clothing, goggles, barrier creamsand rubber gloves is required. At the end of eachworking period the skin should be thoroughlycleansed with soap and warm water or a resinremoving cream. The use of solvents for cleaningskin is to be avoided. If any irritation or rednessis apparent obtain medical advice case of accidental eye or mouth contact flushwith water and obtain medical advice and SafetyFor further information and handling precautionsrefer to the following company material health andsafety data sheets.
