2 The Basics: Plugging In Please make sure you have reviewed Troubleshooting 100: Unboxing before proceeding with this Guide . Most importantly, make sure that if your PC has any internal packing foam that it has been removed. Plug in the power cord from the computer into a working wall outlet. Ensure the plug matches the port on the power supply and that there is a snug fit so that it cannot fall out. Flip the hard switch in the back of the computer to the 'line' or on position. If your power supply has a switch for input voltage, make sure to set it to your country s voltage setting. Some PC's have a single, rectangular button for both the restarting and powering on function.

3 The symbol for power looks like a circle with a line, while the restart symbol looks like a curving arrow. Sometimes power is represented with a P , and restart with an R . Figure 2 - PC Power Button or soft switch Push the power button on top or on front of the case to turn on the PC. If the computer does not turn on and you are currently plugged into a surge protector or power strip, try plugging directly to a wall outlet. Most PCs require a minimum of a keyboard and display to boot properly. On first power on, it is recommended to only plug in the necessary peripherals; keyboard, mouse, display, and Ethernet cable* if available. If you have additional peripherals such as speakers, additional monitors, printers, etc, we recommend waiting until Windows setup is complete before plugging in. 4 Different monitor cables include HDMI, DP, DVI, and VGA. Most new PC's will only support either HDMI or DP. In those cases, the monitor cable must be plugged in ABOVE the audio jacks. Powering On On every power-on cycle, the PC will go through 3 important steps. 5 Power PC is receiving power from the power supply. Usually some LEDs will light up and fans will begin to spin. POST (Power On Self-Test). The PC s motherboard will initialize and check all attached hardware. Your display will activate, usually showing a company logo. POST is required to access the system s BIOS. Boot If your PC has an operating system (like Windows), it has successfully booted once you are on your desktop or login screen. Initial Setup It can take several minutes for Windows to load the first time. If you turn on the computer and see a graphical logo, perhaps with swirling dots, or words like 'just a moment,' give the computer at least 15 minutes to load to the Windows setup. Figure 5 - Region selection during Windows first boot experience During the Windows first boot experience, it may prompt you to create a Microsoft Account. This account provides some benefits for the user experience and can be helpful if you have multiple Windows or Xbox devices which you want to sync files across. It will also help to recover your Windows license in the case of a hardware failure. However some users may still desire to create a local account, this requires the PC to be disconnected from the Internet during setup, so unplug the Ethernet cable or skip the wireless connection step if a local account is desired.
