Organic qualitative analysis is an exercise in spectroscopy. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy are the major spectroscopic techniques used by organic chemists. However, much insight can be gained from using simple qualitative tests to determine the identity of unknowns.
