Thornton, July 2007 INTRODUCTION This file contains five sets of indexed materials of the ITAWAMBA COUNTY Chancery Court record Index of Cases beginning in 1836, going through 1900: 1. An alphabetized list of names extracted from indexed names from the cover of the Packet jackets, abstracts of the contents for a few of the Packets, notes and partial transcriptions of the Packet documents, and notes from the information in Estate Book 5 pages 1 581.

3 2. A listing of the Packets filed in numerical order in the Chancery Court Clerk s files with notations to indicate missing files. 3. An alphabetized list of names from unnumbered Packets with notations as to the location of those Packets within the Chancery files. 4. A listing of the names from Estate Book 5, pages 1 581. 5. A list of the missing Chancery Court Packets by number. An attempt was made to avoid abbreviations in the above files but on occasion words were shorted and/or abbreviated to make the entry fit on to one line of type.

4 Some of the more frequently used abbreviations include: Est: Estate Et al: And others Et ux: And wife H/O: Husband of W/O: Wife of [or widow of] D/O: Daughter of S/O: Son of GD/O: Grand-daughter of GS/O: Grand-son of The spelling of names and words were followed as found: multiple listings were included for all of the various spellings discovered. Different spellings of the same surname occur on several of the Chancery Packets; researchers are advised to check for all possible spellings of the names they are hunting. 3 No attempt was made to arrange the cases by year; few dates of death and/or of Probate are included in this Index .

5 Those dates should be used with caution as many of the Probate Packets contain materials spanning a period of several years. Researchers are reminded that this Index was prepared from a combination of four older works: a numerical listing of packets; a few abstracts of the contents of packets; a listing of some of the materials extracted from Estate Book 5; and a few pages of notes made from an examination of the contents of a few of the Chancery packets. THIS Index WAS NOT DONE DIRECTLY FROM THE Chancery PACKETS AND, THEREFORE, THIS Index DOES NOT CLAIM TO BE REPRESENTATIVE OF WHAT MATERIALS MAY BE FOUND WITHIN A PACKET.

6 RESEARCHERS ARE ADVISED TO EXAMINE THE CONTENTS OF A PACKET TO VALIDATE THE MATERIALS WITHIN. The files in ITAWAMBA COUNTY can be found in the Office of the Chancery Clerk at the Courthouse in Fulton, Mississippi. The packets are filed in cabinets in numerical order. The drawers are numbered and labeled. The lists of packets, abstracts, notes, and listings from Estate Book 5 from which this Index was prepared are available on typewritten copies at the Office of the Chancery Clerk. Approximately 36% of the Chancery Packets are missing according to this Index .

7 This percentage represents 358 Packets of files out of a total of 996 files found to be enumerated. A list of the missing file numbers from the Chancery Packet Records is included in this Index .
