1 Revised January 20, 2016 consultant , Youth Pathways PROGRAM Title consultant , Youth Pathways - Program Scope of Responsibilities The consultant , Youth Pathways is responsible for the support and ongoing development and implementation of community-based learning initiatives provided by the Board in cooperation with the Department of Education and Early Childhood development . The consultant will support schools in the delivery of alternative programs such as Options & Opportunities (O2), Skilled Trades, Discovering Opportunities, and Cooperative Education (co-op) by ensuring curriculum guidelines and procedures are met, providing professional development for teachers, monitoring budgets and by strengthening working partnerships with post-secondary institutions, employers and the community to enrich and expand current and future community-based learning programs .
2 Working as part of a program team, the consultant will report directly to the Coordinator, programs . Competencies Required The consultant , consultant , Youth Pathways shall have the following competencies: (a) The ability to provide leadership and support for the delivery of provincial programming initiatives from implementation to evaluation and the effectiveness of the delivery process; (b) The ability to provide leadership in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data related to student achievement; (c) The ability to analyze problems and formulate recommendations to ensure consistency in the implementation and delivery of effective alternative programming; (d) The ability to develop and implement alternative approaches to student learning across the range of skill and ability levels; (e) The ability to build and maintain relationships with community based partners and employers to support effective programming.
3 (f) The ability to apply the principles and strategies of adult education in the development and delivery of teacher training; (g) The ability to apply acceptable accounting procedures and best practices in budget planning, preparation and monitoring. (h) The ability to solve problems and mediate conflict; (i) Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; (j) The ability to work & communicate effectively within the Halifax Regional School Board, with students, parents, community members and external groups such as government agencies; (k) The ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of race relations, cross cultural understanding, human rights and diversity; (l) The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development ; (m) The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality as the norm. JOB DESCRIPTION JOB DESCRIPTION Revised January 20, 2016 2 Qualifications (a) A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate; (b) Masters Degree in education; (c) Minimum five (5) years successful teaching experience at the secondary level; (d) Experience as a curriculum leader at the School, Board or Department of Education level; (e) Community based learning experience an asset.
4 Specific Job Components The consultant , Youth Pathways shall perform tasks as are assigned by the Coordinator, programs . These tasks may vary, from time to time, with the evolution of the organization and may include but not be limited to the following: (a) Support Department of Education and Early Childhood development initiatives for community-based learning; (b) Provide support for the continuing implementation of the Options & Opportunities (O2), Skilled Trades, and Discovering Opportunities, and co-op programs ; (c) Ensure schools are compliant with guidelines concerning curriculum and procedures; (d) Ensure appropriate guidelines and procedures are in place to support schools with the initiation, implementation and management of community-based learning programs and the O2 Program; (e) Ensure schools are made aware of their responsibility with respect to requirements such as adequate risk assessment, insurance policies for students, transportation policies and teacher insurance coverage.
5 (f) Support schools in efforts to recognize the contribution of the community to community-based learning; (g) Ensure guidelines and procedures are established for involving community hosts in the planning and delivery of co-op and other forms of community-based learning; (h) Facilitate and strengthen working partnerships with post-secondary institutions, employers, and the community to enrich and expand co-op and other forms of community-based learning; (i) Organize professional learning opportunities for teachers to ensure the effective implementation of co-op, O2, Skilled Trades, Discovering Opportunities, and the growth of community-based learning; (j) Work in collaboration with Program Staff to support teacher professional development in the area of community-based learning; (k) Advise schools on allocation of resources (including personnel) to effectively develop, implement and expand co-op and the O2program; (l) Monitor budgets and expenditures for O2, Co-Op, Skilled Trades, Discovering Opportunities, and Work It programs ; (m) Update and manage the O2/community-based learning employer engagement database; (n) Ensure a plan is in place to maintain consistent cooperation and communication among co-op, O2, Skilled Trades, and Discovering Opportunities teachers; (o) Participate in provincial and board level meetings as required; (p) Other duties as required.
