2 Nickel-aluminum-bronze power elements providesuperior resistance to cavitation and corrosion. Modular design permits quick and easy overhaul;mechanical seal can be replaced in less thanone hour. Vaned power elements absorb full power in bothdirections of rotation. Positive sealing between water chamber andbearings permits starting under load and performinga full emergency shutdown under load down tozero speed. Capable of operating in horizontal and verticalattitude ABSORPTION MECHANISMThe power output from the engine is absorbed by watervortices generated in the pockets between rotor andstator vanes. The resulting drag applies a moment tothe dynamometer housing which is measured by astrain-gage load cell mounted at a fixed distance fromthe centerline of the power varies with rotational speed andwith the mass of water contained in the rotor a fully filled rotor chamber, power varies withthe cube of speed.

4 In contrast toother hydraulic DYNAMOMETERS which use less expensivematerials such as cast iron or aluminum, the Series301 DYNAMOMETERS are equipped with power elements(rotor and housing) made from highly corrosion- andcavitation-resistant nickel-aluminum-bronze dynamometer shaft is manufactured from ahigh-strength stainless steel. To reduce downtime, theSeries 301 DYNAMOMETERS are designed in a modularconfiguration. This feature, coupled with the absenceof cumbersome heat shrink fits, permits replacementof the carbon face seal in less than one on a cantilevered shaft by means of aninvolute spline connection, the vaned rotor absorbsfull power in both directions of rotation. The shaft issupported by two grease-packed, spring-loadedprecision ball bearings and is equipped with a 60-toothgear for speed measurement.

5 The rotating assemblyis dynamically balanced in accordance with ANSIS tandard , Grade mechanical carbon face seal provides positivesealing between the water chamber and the prevent overheating and cracking, the seal iscontinuously cooled with water. 6 The SERIES 509 adapter kits include X-shapedor star-shaped flywheel housing adapters, doubleengagement gear couplings, flywheel adapters andmounting hardware. Flywheel housing adapters areavailable for SAE flywheel housings number 00 to couplings are rated at 600 lb-ft, 1260 lb-ft, 2000lb-ft and 3600 lb-ft. Standard flywheel adapters andpremachined blank flywheel adapters are available forCaterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel and many otherdiesel ENGINE ADAPTER KITSERIES 507 This adapter kit is used for direct, alignment-freeinstallation of the Kahn Model 301-130 dynamometerto a gasoline engine.
