1 Lantern Song Quilt Designed by eQuilter 56" x 64" Skill Level: Confident Beginner Finished Quilt Size: 56" x 64" Please read all instructions before beginning. Pre-washing NOT recommended. Yardages and Cutting WOF is width of fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge. Remove as little fabric as possible when removing selvages and squaring strip ends. Lantern Song panel Trim to 34 1/2" x 42 1/2". 2 1/8 yards black solid 2 strips 7 1/2" x WOF; cut into 2 each 7 1/2" x 19 1/2" and 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" rectangles. 3 strips 5 1/2" x WOF; cut into 2 each 5 1/2" x 23 1/2" and 5 1/2" x 19 1/2" rectangles, (2) 5 1/2" squares and (3) 4 3/8" squares. 1 strip 4 3/8" x WOF; cut into (9) 4 3/8" squares. Cut these and the 4 3/8" squares from the previous step in half diagonally to make 24 triangles.
2 4 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; trim to 2 each 42 1/2" and 38 1/2" strips for panel framing. 6 strips 2 1/2" x WOF for border. 5/8 yard gold print 7 strips 2 1/4" x WOF for binding. 3/8 yard red print 4 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; cut into 2 strips each 2 1/2" x 26 1/2", 2 1/2" x 23 1/2" and 2 1/2" x 5 1/2". 1/4 yard Lantern print 1 strip 5 1/2" x WOF; cut into (6) 5 1/2" squares. 4 1/8 yards of 44/45" backing fabric OR 4 5/8 yards of directional backing fabric 2 strips 72" x WOF OR 2 strips 80" x WOF directional fabric OR 2 yards wide backing fabric 1 piece 72" x 80" Batting 1 piece 72" x 80" Completing the Quilt Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams as directed. Refer to the exploded quilt diagram on the next page as needed. 1. Fold each Lantern square in half and in half again with right sides together.
3 Finger-press to crease the center of each side. Fold each black triangle in half with wrong sides together. Finger-press to crease the center of the long edge. 2. Center black triangles right sides together on the top left and bottom right edges of a Lantern square, matching creases. Pin to hold at the crease and at each end. Stitch in place. Press open with seams toward the triangles. Repeat on the remaining sides of the square to complete (1) 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" Lantern unit except press open with seams toward the square. Repeat to make 6 Lantern units. Lantern Unit Make 6 3. Stitch each 2 1/2" x 23 1/2" red strip to a 5 1/2" x 23 1/2" black rectangle to make (2) 7 1/2" x 23 1/2" side strips. Press seams toward the black strips. Side Strip Make 2 4. Sew a 2 1/2" x 5 1/2" red strip between a 5 1/2" black square and 5 1/2" x 19 1/2" black rectangle to make a 5 1/2" x 26 1/2" pieced strip.
4 Press seams toward the black pieces. Stitch to a 2 1/2" x 26 1/2" red strip to make the 7 1/2" x 26 1/2" top strip. Press seam toward the red strip. Repeat to make the bottom strip. Top/Bottom Strip Make 2 5. Stitch 2 1/2" x 42 1/2" black strips to the long sides of the panel. Press seams toward the strips. Sew 2 1/2" x 38 1/2" strips to the top and bottom to complete the 38 1/2" x 46 1/2" framed panel. Press seams toward the strips. 6. Sew a 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" black rectangle to 1 end of each side strip. Press seam toward the rectangle. Add 2 Lantern units, turning units to offset the seams. Press to complete (2) 7 1/2" x 46 1/2" side borders. Press seam open between the units and toward the black rectangle. Stitch the borders to the long sides of the framed panel. Press seams toward the borders. 7. Stitch a 7 1/2" x 19 1/2" black rectangle to 1 end of each top/bottom strip.
5 Press seam toward the rectangle. Add a Lantern unit to complete the 7 1/2" x 52 1/2" top and bottom borders. Press seam away from the Lantern unit. Sew the borders to the top and bottom of the panel section to complete the 52 1/2" x 60 1/2" quilt center. Press seams toward the borders. 8. Sew the 2 1/2" x WOF black strips short ends together to make a long strip. press seams to one side. Cut into 2 strips each 60 1/2" and 56 1/2". Stitch the longer strips to the sides of the quilt center and the shorter strips to the top and bottom to complete the top. Press seams toward the strips. 9. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim to make the 72" x 80" backing piece. 10. Layer the quilt top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Trim batting and backing even with the top.
6 11. Join the gold print binding strips on the short ends with diagonal seams to make a long strip. Press seams open. Press the strip in half along the length with wrong sides together. 12. Bind the quilt edges using your favorite method to complete the quilt.
