Information on ingredients Chemical Name CAS Number EINECS/ ELINCS Classification Concentration Isodecyl methacrylate 29964-84-9 249-978-2 15% Ethanol,2,2 [(4-methyl phenol)imino]bis- 3077-12-1 221-359-1 Xi; R41 < PEG200 Dimethacrylate 25852-47-5 < Silica Sand 14808-60-7 ca 60% Calcium Carbonate 1317-65-3 2152796 Ca 25% Dibenzoyl Peroxide 94-36-0 202/327-6 Xi; R36-43 < 4. First aid procedures General information: Remove contaminated clothing immediately.
Wash before re-use. Inhalation: Remove to fresh air, provide warmth and rest. If necessary, seek medical attention. Skin Contact: Wash contaminated skin with soap and water. If necessary, seek medical attention. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Drink plenty of water and if necessary seek medical attention. Eye Contact: Flush with large amounts of water. If necessary, seek medical attention. 5. Fire fighting measures Extinguishing media: Carbon dioxide, foam or dry powder Decomposition products: Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and water Protective equipment: Wear self contained breathing apparatus Special precautions: Cool endangered vessels with water 6. Accidental release measures Personal precautions: Wear SAFETY goggles and nitrile or neoprene gloves Powder spillages: Damp down powder with water and transfer into a suitable container prior to disposal.
Suitable containers would be plastic buckets (lidded), cardboard cartons or polyethylene sacks. There are no special disposal requirements, disposal should be according to local regulations, preferably approved landfill. Liquid spillages: Contain the spillage and absorb using earth, sand or other absorbent MATERIAL . Particulate materials such as SAFFIRE (supplied by Zeppelin and Co) have been found to be particularly effective and may be incinerated for disposal purposes. The recommended disposal route is incineration. Spillage of mixed compound: The simplest way to treat a spillage of the mixed compound is to allow the cure reaction to complete at which stage the MATERIAL is chemically inert. It may then be treated as for the solid waste above and disposed of by approved landfill Prysmian Cables & Systems Ltd, Components Unit, Oak Road, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Wrexham, LL13 9PH, UK Commercial Enquiries: Tel: 0845 767 8345 Fax: 023 8029 5465 3 of 4 7.
Handling and storage Handling: Use in a well ventilated area Storage: Store in a cool, dry location. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. 8. Exposure controls Exposure controls: No occupational exposure limits have been assigned to the liquid component. Powder Pack: MEL (8 hour TWA) as SiO2 crystalline dust (respirable) (EH40/99) LTEL (8 hour TWA) 10mg/m3 calcium carbonate, total inhalable dust (EH40/99) LTEL (8 hour TWA) 4mg/m3 calcium carbonate, total respirable dust (EH40/99) LTEL (8 hour TWA) 5mg/m3 OES for benzoyl peroxide (EH40/99) Personal protection: Observe normal SAFETY and hygiene standards Wear suitable overalls, gloves (nitrile or neoprene) and eye protection. 9. Physical and chemical properties Description: The mixed (but un-cured) system is a grey-brown viscous liquid with a faint characteristic odour). The mixed MATERIAL has a specific gravity of g/cm3.
10. Stability and reactivity Will polymerise exothermically when mixed. Maximum exothermic temperature is 550C. Conditions to avoid: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and ambient temperatures in excess of 450C. Materials to avoid: Strong oxidising and reducing agents 11. Toxicological information Skin and eye irritation studies have been carried out on isodecyl methacrylate: Eyes: Eye irritancy has been investigated using OECD Test Method 405. Single application to rabbit eye produced minimal conjunctival irritation. Skin: Skin irritancy has been investigated using OECD Test Method 404. Single 4 hour application to rabbit skin produced minimal signs of irritation. Skin sensitisation studies have been carried out on the three component liquid system: Sensitisation: Skin sensitisation has been investigated using OECD Test Method 406. No evidence of skin sensitisation was detected.
There are no known reports of respiratory sensitisation. Prysmian Cables & Systems Ltd, Components Unit, Oak Road, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Wrexham, LL13 9PH, UK Commercial Enquiries: Tel: 0845 767 8345 Fax: 023 8029 5465 4 of 4 12. Ecological information No ecotoxological information for the compound is currently available. The principle organic constituent (isodecyl methacrylate) is expected to be slowly biodegradable and will not bioaccumulate. The cured system will not be biodegradable. 13. Disposal considerations In accordance with local regulations. Cured MATERIAL may be disposed of by approved landfill and un-cured MATERIAL by incineration. Plastic containers may be disposed of by approved landfill if contaminated by cured MATERIAL . Uncontaminated packaging ( the external plastic container for two part kits) may be re-granulated for further use.
14. Transport information This MATERIAL is not classified as hazardous for transport. 15. Regulatory information The results from the OECD test methods (Section 11, above) dictate that (under EC Directive 67/548/EC as amended by ATP 2001/59/CE) no hazard warning labelling is required for this product. 16. Additional information This MATERIAL SAFETY Data SHEET is compiled in accordance with REACH regulations EC 1907/2006 MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET JEM RESIN POWDER PACK ISSUE DATE: 31st JULY 2008 1 Identification of substance Commercial Name: JEM Resin Powder Pack Type of product: Cable joint encapsulant Supplier: Prysmian Cables and Systems Components Unit Address: Oak Road, Wrexham Industrial Estate, Wrexham LL13 9PH Telephone: 01978 66 2375 Fax: 01978 66 2410 Emergency Number: 01978 66 2216 E-mail: 2 Hazards Identification According to experience this product is considered to be harmless to health and the environment.
