DUCTILE IRON PIPE - 7 THE ADVANCEMENT OF DUCTILE IRON PIPE Photomicrograph of gray cast iron (100x)showing carbon in the form of graphite of Ductile Cast Iron (100x)showing carbon in the form of graphite Iron Pipe has long been the standardmaterial for conveying water and sewage inmunicipal, utility and industrial piping real life expectancy of cast iron pipe isunknown, but is usually estimated at 100 yearsor more.

The oldest operating cast iron main isthat at Versailles, France, installed in 1664. Inthis country and in Canada there are more than500 members of the Cast Iron Pipe CenturyClub, a unique organization composed of citiesor utilities who have cast iron pipe still in ser-vice after 100 Iron Pipe, a product of advancedmetallurgy, offers unique properties for convey-ing water under pressure, and other piping combines the physical strength of mild steelwith the long life of gray cast iron offers the greatest possiblemargin of safety against service failures due toground movement and beam stresses. Virtuallyunbreakable in ordinary service, it also pro-vides increased resistance to breakage causedby rough handling in shipping and corrosion resistance of ductile iron pipehas been proved in a wide variety of acceleratedtests to be at least the equal of gray cast iron is produced by adding a closelycontrolled amount of magnesium alloy to amolten iron of low phosphorous and low sulfurcontent.

The magnesium alloy addition pro-duces a remarkable change in the microstruc-ture by causing the carbon in the iron to assumea spheroidal or nodular shape, (as contrasted tothe flake form of graphite in gray cast iron), andat the same time producing a finer grained ironmatrix in the surrounding ferrite structure. As aresult of this remarkable change, a far stronger, tougher, and ductile material is addition to the benefits of long life, cor-rosion resistance, high structural strength, andtight joints, ductile iron is also readily machin-able, an important requirement in any pipe thatmust be drilled, tapped or mcwane Companies manufacture Duc-tile Iron Pipe in strict accordance with designcriteria that have been developed by the Ameri-can National Standards Institute, and whichequals or exceeds the requirements of all pub-lished standards of the American Water WorksAssociation. - DUCTILE IRON PIPE 8 EVOLUTION OF CAST IRON PIPE STANDARDS Prior to 1902, there were no standard speci-fications for cast iron pipe in the United was furnished to individual user specifica-tions or to the manufacturer s own first published standards for cast ironpipe were issued by the New England WaterWorks Association in 1902 and by the Ameri-can Society for Testing Materials in , the first widely accepted standardswere those adopted by the American WaterWorks Association in 1908 covering both pitcast gray iron pipe and gray iron specifications for pit cast gray ironpipe and fittings for gas were adopted by theAmerican Gas Institute in 1911, and wererevised and reissued by the American GasAssociation in 1927, Federal Specifications FS-537were issued covering cast iron water pipe, cen-trifugally cast.

These specifications were super-seded by Federal Specifications WW-P-421 1926, Committee A21 of the AmericanStandard s Association was formed to preparenew standard specifications for cast iron pipeunder the sponsorship of the AGA, ASTM,AWWA, and NEWWA. Participating in thisstudy were representatives of sponsors, con-sumers, producers, and consulting result of this comprehensive, scientificstudy was the issuing in 1939 of ASA , Manual for the Computation of Strength andThickness of Cast Iron Pipe. This manual tookinto account the combined effect of trenchloads, internal pressure, water-hammer, layingconditions and corrosion, all with a built-in fac-tor of safety. At the time it represented the bestavailable knowledge that could be applied tocast iron pipe design. ASA Manual wasthe basis for the several specifications which in1952 and 1953 were first issued by the Ameri-can Standards Association and adopted by itssponsoring 1939, ASA Specifications forCement-Mortar Lining of Cast-Iron Pipe andFittings was 1949, the first comprehensive standardcovering the installation of water-main waspublished by the American Water Works Asso-ciation, Standard Specifications for Installa-tion of Cast-Iron Water Mains, (C-600).

In 1955, the Federal Specifications Boardissued a revised WW-P-421 specification, WW-P-421a, which was later superseded by WW-P-421b and WW-P-421c. Weights, thicknessesand dimensions of pipe in this specificationconformed to the appropriate provisions ofASA 1965, ASA (AWWA Manual H3)was adopted, covering ductile iron pipe design, along with ASA (AWWA C151) Duc-tile Iron Pipe for Water, and ASA A21. 52, Duc-tile iron Pipe for 1968, , Gray Iron and DuctileIron Fittings for Gas, was adopted by the stan-dards 1969, the standards association changedits name to American National Standards Insti-tute, Inc. It also changed the designation of itsstandards to American National Standard, abbreviated ANSI for the identification of docu-ments: as ANSI 1972, the Standards Institute (AWWA C105), Polyethylene Encase-ment for Gray and Ductile Cast Iron Piping forWater and Other Liquids. In 1975, the Standards Institute (AWWA C115), Standard for FlangedDuctile-Iron Pipe with Ductile iron or gray ironthreaded flanges.
