There are several types of mbira, but the most popular is the mbira dzavadzimu, meaning literally "mbira of the ancestor spirits," a reference to the instrument's traditional use and function in religious ceremonies. Some traditional musicians object to this name because they say that all mbiras belong to the spirits.
