Thefounder, Edmund Galindo, suffered from chronic kidney disease. Unaware of the severity of his condition, he volunteeredfor the war effort in 1941. Doctors there were so alarmed they told him he only had one more year to live! He survivedthat prediction by 18 years. Eventually medical treatment was no longer effective and a urinary diversion was performedin January of 1958. Back then there were no ET s to turn to for help and there were many frustrating months of leakage,sore skin, and constant laundry. However, Edmund was not about to give up. Being of keen mind, he experimented withnew appliance designs and by the middle of 1958 he succeeded. Ed proved the worthiness of his new appliance systemon himself, returning to his active life of business, golf and swimming.

2 The doctors in the Los Angeles area were so im-pressed with his success that they urged him to manufacture and market his appliances so that others might benefit. At first, supplies and appliances were freely handedout. Soon it became apparent that in order to continuehelping others a company had to be formed. Thus, in1959, Nu-Hope Laboratories, was founded. The namewas derived from Mrs. Galindo's first name "Hope",and the feeling that they were offering "new hope" toothers in need. Unhappily, Edmund Galindo's healthcontinued to deteriorate and on November 11, 1959,he passed away. Determined to carry on the founder'slegacy, Hope Galindo and 19 year old son Eugenecontinued with the business. In 1974 Edmundsdaughter, Louise, became an active member of thefamily business for 20 years. During the pioneering years, Gene Galindo visited andfitted hundreds of Ostomy patients in hospitals andhomes and learned much about stomas and stoma care.
