This Manual contains the rules of selection, code descriptions, code titles, and indices, for the following code structures: Nature of Injury or Illness , Part of Body Affected, Source ofInjury or Illness , Event or Exposure, and Secondary Source of Injury or Occupational Injury and Illness Classification Manual was developed by the Bureau of LaborStatistics' Classification Structure Team with input from data users and States participating in theBLS Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Federal/State cooperative Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System contains the following code structuresto be used in coding the case characteristics of Occupational injuries and illnesses in the OSH andCFOI statistical programs: Nature of Injury or Illness Part of Body Affected Source of Injury or Illness /Secondary Source of Injury or Illness Event or ExposureThe OI&ICM is arranged in a structured format so that any section of the Manual may beremoved for use independently as required by the user.

This also allows future updates to bemade without having to replace the whole Manual is designed to accommodate the coder of Injury , Illness , and fatality data provided bythe OSH and CFOI programs. Therefore, this Manual is a reference tool that enables the coder todetermine the proper Nature, Part of Body Affected, Source, Event, and Secondary Source codefor any given Injury or Illness case in an accurate and timely code structure in this Manual is presented with and without the code descriptions. The codedescriptions provide more detail about the codes themselves. The descriptions are extremelyuseful in determining the make-up of the code categories--the kind of information that each codeis trying to capture. The description often gives examples of the codes that would be selected forrare and unusual Injury and Illness becoming familiar with the code descriptions, the coder will find the code titles and thealpha indices at the end of the Manual to be helpful in expediting the coding gives an overview of the Occupational Injury and Illness Classification Injury and Illness Classification Manual12/92 EXHIBIT of the Occupational Injury and IllnessClassification ManualSECTION 1 Table of Contents IntroductionSECTION 2 Descriptions Definitions Rules of SelectionSECTION 3 TitlesSECTION 4 IndicesUS DEPARTMENT OF LABORBUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICSOCCUPATIONALINJURY & ILLNESSCLASSIFICATIONMANUAL1 9 9 2 THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK2-1 Occupational Injury and Illness Classification Manual12/92 SECTION ,Rules ofSelection.

Example: For strainedback, choose Sprains, strains, two or more injuries or illnesses are indicated, and one is a sequela, aftereffect, orcomplication due to medical treatment, choose the initial Injury or Illness . Example: If alaceration became infected developing into septicemia, choose Cuts, two or more injuries or illnesses are indicated and one is more severe than theother(s), select the more severe Injury or Illness .

Example: If sprained finger andfractured wrist, choose When a single event or exposure produces an Injury and transmits a diseasesimultaneously, and one is more severe than the other(s), select the more severeinjury or disease. Example: If a needle stick produces a puncture wound andtransmits an infectious disease, serum hepatitis, choose serum two or more injuries or illnesses are indicated but no one can be determined asbeing more severe than the others, select the appropriate multiple injuries or illnessesclassification code. Example: For fractured and burned left leg, choose Fractures Injury and Illness Classification Manual12 of Injury or Illness --Titles and DescriptionsThe Nature of Injury or Illness code structure is arranged so that traumatic injuries and disordersare listed first (in Division 0) while diseases are listed in Divisions 1 through 8.

Division 8classifies multiple physical characteristerics whose individual codes are found in Divisions 1through of Injury or Illness code description pages are numbered from DN-1 through DN-40 (the"D" meaning "description, the "N" meaning "nature").The divisions are identified by title at the top right corner of each Nature of Injury or Illness divisions are arranged as follows: DIVISION TITLE0 Traumatic Injuries and Disorders1 Systemic Diseases or Disorders2 Infectious and Parasitic Diseases3 Neoplasms, Tumors, and Cancer4 Symptoms, Signs, and Ill-defined Conditions5 Other Conditions or Disorders8 Multiple Diseases, Conditions, or Disorders 9999 NonclassifiableTHIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANKNATURE TRAUMATIC INJURIES AND DISORDERS*-Asterisks indicate division, major group, or group titles12/92 DN - 10*TRAUMATIC INJURIES AND DISORDERSThis division classifies traumatic injuries and disorders, effects of external agents, and , a traumatic Injury or disorder is the result of a single incident, event, or injuries and disorders.

UnspecifiedThis major group classifies traumatic injuries and disorders when the onlyinformation available describes the incident as traumatic. For example, employeewas hurt in car *Traumatic injuries to bones, nerves, spinal cordThis major group classifies traumatic injuries to the bones, nerves, or spinal cord which includebreaking and dislocating bones and cartilage and traumatic Injury to the brain, spinal cord, injuries to bones, nerves, spinal cord, unspecified011 DislocationsThis nature group classifies displacement or dislocation of bone or :subluxations; slipped, ruptured, or herniated disc; partialdisplacement; and fractured or broken cartilage012 FracturesThis nature group classifies traumatic injuries that result in fractures of bones or :closed fractures for which no open wound exists; open fractures forwhich there is an accompanying open wound.

Diseases or disorders of thenervous system that occur over time as a result of repetitive activity, such as carpaltunnel syndrome, are classified in major group :division of nerve, lesion in continuity , traumatic neuroma,Excludes:diseases or disorders affecting the nervous system (12), diseases ordisorders affecting the sense organs (12), carpal tunnel syndrome(1241), hearing loss (1261), loss of vision (1255), traumatic transientparalysis (013), and severed spinal cord (013)NATURE TRAUMATIC INJURIES AND DISORDERS*-Asterisks indicate division, major group, or group titles12/92 DN - 2018 Multiple traumatic injuries to bones, nerves, spinal cordThis nature group classifies multiple injuries and disorders of equal severity withinTraumatic injuries to bones, nerves, spinal cord, major group injuries to bones, nerves, spinal cord, *Traumatic injuries to muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, major group classifies traumatic injuries that affect the muscles, tendons, ligaments.
