THIS UNIT OF COMPETENCE DESCRIBES THE MINIMUM standards OF PERFORMANCE RECOMMENDED BY THE offshore PETROLEUM INDUSTRY. IT DOES NOT FORM PART OF A NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION GROUP TITLE : MANAGING offshore INSTALLATIONS UNIT : Controlling EMERGENCIES (Core Unit) This Unit of competence is concerned principally with emergencies involving large numbers of people and which by their very nature are threats to life, the installation or the environment.

7 This Unit forms the Core for all types of installations. Where applicable, the following endorsements (specific to the type of installation) must be assessed in conjunction with this Core Unit. These are: Endorsement: Production Operations (Fixed) Endorsement: Production Operations (Floating) Endorsement: Drilling Operations (Fixed) Endorsement: Drilling Operations (Floating) Endorsement: Mobile/Floating Installations Endorsement: Normally Unattended Installations (NUI) EVIDENCE: During an emergency, with time being of the essence much of the assessment evidence required for Elements 2 to 6 will become available within a short period of time.

8 Evidence for Element 1, however, will be compiled by the Duty Holder from naturally occurring sources of evidence ( OPITO certificates will only be issued when the delegate is deemed competent in all elements of the STANDARD ); the function being pro-active rather than reactive. A minimum of 3 emergency scenarios should take place to ensure the standards of performance are covered. Each should be based around a major incident chosen from: Well Control Incident Explosion and fire Accommodation fire Helicopter incident Pipeline incident Collision or wave damage causing structural collapse Loss of stability (Mobile installations) OPITO APPROVED STANDARD OIM Controlling Emergencies OPITO REV.
