This is not a policy document but is a resource for teachers. The Work Schedule and the Teachers Guide follow the same weekly plan for each grade. The Work Schedule This broad framework offers a selection of content (Learning Outcomes and Core Knowledge and Concepts) for each grade 7-9.

2 The Work Schedule gives a week by week outline of the content, and the assessment focus. It works towards all three NS Learning Outcomes and covers all the assessment standards. It covers all the Core Knowledge and Concepts in the four strands of the natural sciences . The teacher s Guide The teacher s Guide elaborates and elucidates the outline given in the Work Schedule week by week in each grade. It gives a wide variety of lessons which build up to various assessment tasks related to the NS Learning Outcomes.

3 It gives further detail of the concepts to be taught and methods to be used. It also details the integration possibilities between the NS strands as well as between the different Learning Areas. How to use the Work Schedule and teacher s Guide We recommend that: Teachers use these documents to support their own plans and incorporate what they find useful. Teachers adapt the programme to the pace of their learners. Teachers choose what is suitable to their context and what is manageable in their classroom.

4 Teachers should plan their assessment programme in advance for each term according to their own teaching pace. Teachers should integrate content wherever it is appropriate. Teachers should consult the National Curriculum Statement Policy - Document as a reference to the learning outcomes, assessment standards and prescribed content knowledge. Teachers should make sure that learners use correct scientific terminology as stated in the work schedules. Teachers should use mind maps / concept maps / flow charts / diagrams, etc as part of their teaching strategy to make sure that learners are sure in which context they are learning.

5 Teachers should address and develop among learners a range of process skills effectively ( , observing and comparing, measuring & estimating, classifying, questioning, hypothesising, recording information in tables and graphs, predicting, experimenting communicating what they see, draw graphs, etc.), that will develop their ability to be objective, think and reason in a variety of ways. It must not, though, develop into learned vocabulary words without the verbal use of the words. Learners must be allowed to revisit the meanings. Guide : The Guide should help teachers on HOW to set up their own activities. Use your own experience and creativity in your levels of planning according to your own school s needs, learners, community, surroundings and resources.

9 Also build in learning barriers, extended learning and diversity see policy documents. Attend to Literacy and Numeracy where applicable throughout the year while teaching, learning and assessing. Methodology: Use appropriate methods of teaching. Take into account the assessment standards, core knowledge, resources available and inclusivity (differentiated teaching and learning styles). Examples: Make sure that the same examples are not repeated in the Phase . Teachers, in the same Phase , need to talk to one another or plan together.

10 Resources: Be familiar with resources needed and resources available in your school/community during teaching, learning and assessing natural sciences in your school. Integration: Address integration or links where it naturally occurs. Integration is seen within the knowledge strands of natural sciences , and across the different learning areas. Although the four knowledge strands is set out separately per term in the Intermediate Phase , you can still ensure that natural sciences is not taught in compartments.
