Transcription of Process Engineering Fundamentals for Formulation ...
1 Why is this Module important?A formulated product is inseparable from the Process used to formulate it. An appreciation of Process Engineering is essential to the formulator who needs to know how a formulated product is manufactured and optimised. The principles of Process Engineering are common to all formulating industries (pharmaceuticals, food, agrochemicals, coatings, personal care etc.). Who is this Module suitable for? Most formulators who have been educated in chemistry, pharmacy or materials science will benefit from a better understanding of chemical Engineering . This module introduces students from a non- chemical Engineering background to the fundamental aspects of Process Engineering . The ideas and skills developed during the module are essential for anyone planning to work in the Process industries.
2 How will students benefit?Formulators from industry will be able to apply their knowledge in order to: aid selection of the appropriate equipment to manufacture new formulations; adapt formulations to better suit existing manufacturing and Process equipment; scale up and optimise Formulation processes from the point of view of cost, quality and environmental impact; help resolve problems of product quality and performance which relate to manufacturing does this Module cover? The module introduces the fundamental aspects of chemical Engineering . The module covers material and energy balances and then looks at fluid flow, heat and mass transfer and reactor design. The mathematical skills required for this and subsequent modules will be developed throughout the programme through self-study packages and tutorials.
3 The module covers the following topics: Dimensional Analysis - Engineering units and the concepts of dimensional reasoning Mass and energy balances and their use in plant design and flowsheeting Basics of fluid flow - Bernoulli's theorem, pressure loss and pumps Material handling - solid/gas and solid/liquid interactions Heat transfer - design of heat exchangers Engineering Services - steam and refrigeration Fundamentals of Mass transfer Reaction kinetics Basic reactors - plug flow and continuous stirred tanksWhat will the student learn?By the end of the module the student should be able to: Perform mass and energy balance calculations; Understand and describe how fluids flow in pipes; Predict rates of heat transfer to equipment; Understand the principles of mass transfer; Understand basic reactor Engineering Fundamentals for FormulatorsUniversity of Birmingham Formulation EngineeringDelivery Mode: In-person or e-learningAssessment: One 2 hr written examination (80%) Coursework (20%)Core Module 10 CreditsFor more information about the Modular Masters or to apply please email or call 01925 515
