We gathered once again in this humble site for our annual apple strudel making day, a tradition we ve enjoyed for the past 35 Nov. 7, members from SNPJ Lodges 113, 689 and 757 joined forces to prepare more than 50 pans of apple strudel. This effort supports our Slovenian Day Picnic held each summer. Members of all ages joined in the fun as we worked, laughed and shared stories.

5 It s always an opportunity to celebrate our heritage by pass-ing on the art of strudel making to our youth members. We look forward to this day each year as a time to catch up and renew old making a 35-year autumn tradition in Utahby JEAN KOCI (786) Federation of California LodgesFONTANA, Calif. A celebratory crowd attended this year s Vinska Trgatev hosted by the Federation of California Lodges at the Slovene Hall in Fontana on Nov. 1. The tables were decked out with red tablecloths and wine bottle vases filled with autumn leaves. The arbor was strung with colored lights, ivy, and tempting bags of candy and other treats just waiting to be plucked off by thieves lurking in the far corners of the village. Accordions were playing as guests arrived; the musicians couldn t wait to show their stuff before the festivities Koci was all dressed up for the occasion with his Alpine hat, vest and Slo-venian shawl.

6 He was ready to sell tickets as the guests started arriving, anxious to find a good table to settle in before the pageant. Fred Mlakar, also dressed for the part, or-ganized the actors so everything would go off without a hitch. The jail was set up and ready to secure anyone caught stealing from the arbor. The judge had his podium and gavel ready to proclaim sentences for the guilty. Beautiful harvest baskets donated by the four Lodges that make up California Federation sat on the stage, awaiting the drawings that would be held later that evening. We thank Lodges 304, 723, 745 and 786 for their gen-erous want to say thank you to those who paid their admission and bought additional tickets for the drawings as this added to a sizable donation for the SNPJ Scholarship Fund which supports many young adult members attending colleges across the country. There were even a few additional prizes that were donated for the cause, so we had a few extra happy winners pageant started at about 2 with an explanation of the tradition by Fred Mlakar.

7 The night watchman was played by Pam Pand a, and I have to say that she was hilarious in making the part one of the funniest we ve ever seen. On Sunday, Oct. 4, seven SNPJ members were honored by the Conemaugh Valley Federation for 50, 60, 70 or 80 years of membership in the Society at the lovely Homestead Inn in Elton, Pa., which provided a beautiful setting for this guests began arriving, the musical selec-tions played by Ed Zablotny brought pleasant memories to many of those present, I m sure. Welcome remarks were made by Conemaugh Valley Federation President Francis Buck Naugle (254), followed by a delicious home-style dinner. Everything was served piping hot by two friendly young men, and there was plenty of food to go around. Several of the Federation ladies brought homemade desserts, including a generous as-sortment of cookies, potica and cakes. Thanks to Julie Wagner, Donna Naugle and myself for doing such a nice dinner, Theresa Stigers sang the National Anthem, followed by a delightful presentation of Slovenian songs by Ed Zablotny and Joe McCloskey with vocals by Theresa.
