The 10th Asia edifact Board meeting was held in Bangkok on June 6-7, 1995. 2representatives from Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, ,Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand attended and observers also attended from UN/ECE,UN/ESCAP, Hong Kong, Indonesia and member countries. Totally 220 members andobservers participated in the Indonesia reported that Indonesia is now going to prepare its participation in the Eight AS/EB joint working groups of Financial, Awareness and Education, TAG,Transport, Customs, Purchasing, Security and Airtransport Sub-working Group had one ortwo days meeting in parallel on June 5-6 just before the AS/EB The terms of office of the current AS/EB office bearers shall end the end of December1994.

The 1st Internetwork Implementation Committee was held under the chairmanship of MrAnuar Maarof, the vice-chair of the ASEB on June 3rd 1995. The meeting adopted theproposed terms of reference of the Group, with the main objective to work towards the settingup of inter-network connections among member The EDICOM '95 meeting would be held back-to-back with the 11th ASEB meeting onOctober 30-31, 1995. The 11th ASEB meeting will be held on November 1-3, 1995 in theHotel Hilton, Kuala The 3rd UN/ESCAP Network meeting on Trade Facilitation was held in Bangkok on June8-9, 1995.
3 At this meeting, the EDI related educational materials which was developed by thecollaboration project between the ESCAP and the ASEB were released and disseminated to allparticipants. These materials consist of two modules of Management overview and TechnicalOverview and each module consists of text for students, tutorial text, transparencies for OHPand softcopies for PC 3 Local DEVELOPMENTS in the Asia region8. Chinese Taipei- In Trade-Van (Customs Clearance System), the Customs Air Cargo Clearance System wassuccessfully implemented in November 1992. By April 1995, this system had 389 usersincluding 339 Customs brokers/freight forwarders, 28 banks, 3 warehouses, 16importer/exporters, 2 airlines, 1 control agency and Customs.
4 Around 99% of the import aircargo declarations and 95% of the export declarations are transmitted through the automatedEDI system. Trade-Van was expanded to Sea Cargo Clearance System since November April 1995, this system has 164 users including 114 customs brokers/freight forwarders, 12container yards, 5 importer/exporters, 31 shipping companies, 2 control agency and 33% of the import declarations and 20% of the export declarations are transmittedthrough the new automated EDI The shipping order system was launched in September 1993. This system has 10 usersincluding 3 shipping companies and 7 agents as of April For the manufacturing industry, two industries have implemented EDI system.
5 One isautomobile industry, by using DELFOR (Delivery Schedule), INVOIC (Invoice) andREMADV (Remittance Advice) messages. The other is tool machinery industry who usesORDERS and REMADV messages. The total users are 150 in Automobile EDI System and28 in Tool Machinery EDI For the Nationwide Commercial EDI System, 390 users in total implemented the EDIsystem including 11 chainstore companies, 320 sales points, 39 major suppliers, 3 distributioncenters, 3 cargo transportation companies and 14 India- The use of EDI service by the business community is rising in India. Though exact figuresare not available but there are nearly 500 EDI users in the country and with the introduction ofEDI at Indian Customs the number is expected to major EDI users in India presently are Customs, Port Trusts, Shipping Agents, Couriers,Custom House Agents, Educational Institutes, Importers/Exporters, Ministry of Transport Japan- There are about 50,000 EDI users in Japan on the private and sectorial network.
6 The largestnumber of EDI users are in the distribution industry (70-80%), followed by manufacturing(10-15%), shipping and shipping related industries. In April 1995, Japan Distribution Industryhas officially announced to use an international EDI standards (which is UN/ edifact ) fortheir domestic business transactions. Some of major retailers and department stores are goingto implement EDI system based on UN/ edifact Korea- Currently the overall users of EDI in Korea are about 3000 including trade firms, shippinglines, banks, forwarders, customs brokers etc. It was a remarkable growth compared with thelast year. The number of new user is expected to grow continuously in the 4- Korea Insurance development Institute (KIDI) and most of Cargo Insurance Companieslaunched insurance EDI system under the KTNet in May 1995.
7 Insurance Companies are nowconnected to Trade Automation Network, which enables Cargo Insurance Contract to be sentto and from trade firms and insurance companies. Cargo Insurance Policy Advice can beexchanged between them via the KTNet. (It used to take a few days to complete theseprocedures, but now only a couple of hours are enough.)- In the field of Trade Automation Service between bank and trade firms, the service of localL/C was available as of February this year. For that, the Bank of Korea revised the relatedregulations in last year and KEC MD2 developed some new messages related local Korean Customs Service (KCS) successfully implemented the Export Clearance System inNovember 1994. It is the first EDI system of a series of the Customs Automation Systemwhich have been developed since 1993.
8 Currently about 500 customs brokers and tradingcompanies are exchanging the export clearance data to and from the customs, via the number of messages is amounting 20,000 per one Malaysia- The PKCS (Port Klang Community System), the electronic data interchange (EDI) systemfor trade facilitation has notched further progress since going live on April 4, 1994. On March13, 1995, Customs Import Declarations (K1 Forms) began to be submitted electronically. Atfull implementation, PKCS will involve 22 government agencies, 350 forwarding agents, 150shipping agents, 5 hauliers and 12 banks. Import declarations alone will account for anaverage of 2,000 transactions per day. When all port transactions are done through EDI,PKCS handle no less than 6,000 transactions per day.
9 Currently there are 285 users subscribedto DAGANG*NET in Port Klang alone for PKCS implementation. March 13 1995 was thedeadline for full EDI based submission of K1 (Customs Import) Declarations, which has beena The Customs Information System (SMK) - DAGANG*NET Interface Pilot was officiallylaunched on March 31st 1995. This project took Malaysia one giant step closer to therealization of a fully integrated EDI-based port community system which will eventually beemulated at all other ports in the 513. PhilippinesThe Philippine EDI Committee was created by a resolution of the National InformationTechnology Council and formally organized in April 19 1995 with Mr Philip Panlilio asChairman. The DTI/GTEB* provides the secretariat to the PEC.
10 The PEC agreed to adopt theUN/ edifact as the message standard for implementing EDI in the country.(*) GTEBNet is an electronic network for textile quota administration, export documentationand import authorization, including the electronic visa information system (ELVIS) for the USCustoms, has been set up for the Garments and Textile Export Board, a quasi-governmentagency attached to the Department of Trade and Industry. The Project will service more than1,500 garment exporters, with transaction volume of about 240,000 Peoples Republic of China ( )- The customs EDI clearance system of aircargo was applied at BeijingCapital Airport in 1994. MIS (Management Information System) of CAAC's (Administrationof Civil Aviation of China) cargo system has EDI software for customs declaration.
