Cross-border and transit freight transport by road among many ESCAP member States along the Asian Highway network often range from difficult to non-existing, due to differences in technical and operational STANDARDS including STANDARDS on weights, dimensions and emissions . Differences in national STANDARDS in the design and construction of road infrastructure as well as vehicles permissible weight, dimensions and emissions pose various challenges in international road transport.
