Prolonged and repeated exposure toconcentrations of crystalline silica exceeding the workplace exposure limit (WEL) may lead to chronic lung disease such assilicosis. IARC Monographs, Vol. 68, 1997, concludes that there is sufficient evidence that inhaled crystalline silica in the form ofquartz or cristobalite from occupational sources causes cancer in humans.
