4 2 My Dear Parishioners, There is a line in the patriotic hymn America the Beautiful that says, America, God shed His grace on thee. With just a few twists of words, I feel we can say upon reflecting on last week s Padre Pio Festival and Picnic, that God shed His grace upon St. bede , and all the hundreds of people who joined us. From the two beauti-ful, dry days that were filled with sunlight shed upon us to the many joy-filled comments of those who came to the Healing Service and procession, we all felt God s grace in many ways. Friday night s Youth Event drew about 60 teens and young adults for a Holy Hour, followed by social activities on our festival grounds. But the amazing thing is that almost every one of them took advantage of the opportunity to go to confession. Padre Pio, the Saint of the confessional, must have been smiling down upon them.
5 After a somewhat slow start at Noon, the Parish Picnic soon filled up with more people around 2pm as several of our young families joined us after soccer games. Combining the picnic with the festival, and on a Saturday, brought larger attendance as evidenced by wrist band sales and happy faces on the kids, who had many activities to keep them busy. One of the changes that seemed to work the best was how the picnic ended, and many parishioners then went right into church for the Vigil Mass in honor of Padre Pio, followed by blessings with his relics. It looked like Christmas Eve Mass because at least half of the people packed into pews shoulder to shoulder were visiting pilgrims. In fact, pilgrims came in great numbers both Saturday and Sunday from all parts of the tri-state area, and beyond. I met people from Trenton, River-side, NJ, and from the sea coast towns of Brielle, Sea Girt and Lavallete.
6 There were people from Maryland and Virginia. But the person who came the furthest distance was a lady named Mary Malone, who traveled from Chicago, IL for one reason: to seek Padre Pio s intercession. These long-distance pilgrims saw our festival advertised on the internet. The marvels of modern social media! Our festival weekend climaxed with a beautiful Mass, street procession and healing service. Eight priests assisted with confessions that went on for hours. People thanked us for our hospitality, extremely good organization, and especially for the opportunity to honor Padre Pio. The site of so many people with extreme physical ailments was overwhelming. Perhaps the most encouraging remark came from a pilgrim who said, With all that is going on in the Church right now, this festival has brought me great hope and consolation. Of course, a festival weekend of such magnitude could not have happened without the vision and help of so many of you who volunteered your time, talent and treasure.
7 I thank in a special way Brian Stedman, the chair of the festival, Nancy and Paul Carberry and Cas Ilenda, co-leaders of the picnic, who as usual worked with the support of Barbara Rogowski our Office Manager and Ralph Bonadies our Grand Knight and all of the Knights of Columbus, and other parish organizations who labored side by side with each other and us priests to make it all happen. As so many visiting priests told us, Only in St. bede Parish could you see this. Again, as always, I am so proud of you all! May God bless you, and may the blessings of Padre Pio come upon you and your family. A Message From Your PastorA Message From Your Pastor Rev. Monsignor John C. When we em-brace the graces and gifts we receive from the Holy Spirit, we grow as followers of Jesus. We see the effect of the Holy Spirit s presence in our lives in special qualities and attitudes that we develop as we grow in our faith. The 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit are signs that the Holy Spirit is alive within us and helping us live the Catholic faith in our daily lives.
