The Slurry Pump system is a generally standard design that will be used to retrieve other tanks as well, so recommendations made from this analysis will be useful for future like systems used for tank retrieval. This analysis was performed to determine if the current system design provides a reasonable probability that the Slurry Pump system availability and reliability are adequate to meet tank retrieval goals, and whether some cost effective equipment modifications and/or operating improvements could be made to improve the Slurry Pump system availability and reliability.

9 A system model of the Slurry Pump system was developed in BlockSim 1 using a reliability block diagram method. Using failure rate data for specific components and parts, the reliability of the system was determined over the anticipated mission time. The mean time to repair for each of the components was then estimated in a very conservative manner to determine a baseline availability. The analysis was then run again with reductions made in the mean times to repair to demonstrate how much system availability could improve by improving the mean time to repair by such methods as pre-planning replacement work, utilizing condition-based monitoring to detect impending component failures, providing for just-in-time procurement or spare parts storage, and other improvements in the general maintenance strategy and approach.

10 No reliability goals have been imposed on the Slurry Pump system by Washington River Protection Solutions, LLC; therefore, the only criterion for the design of this system to meet is that it has a reasonable probability of completing the retrieval mission. The analysis was conducted for a mission duration of 2 years. It has been estimated in a previous study that the actual operating time of the equipment will only be 4,066 hours over this time period. However, the 2-year mission time was used in the analysis as most of the failures will be either early or random failures as opposed to wear-out failures over this time period. From a system perspective, the Slurry Pump system is very similar to the Extended Reach Sluicing System Hydraulic Subsystem that was analyzed in RPP-RPT-58732.
