This matrix range of rail guides is suitablefor almost every area of Precision rail guides are avail-able in many different designs, sizesand standard lengths, incorporatingball, roller or needle roller assembliesand plain bearings. Suitable accesso-ries are also available for attachmentand use of SKF Precision rail guidesfacilitates the construction of econo-mical, clearance-free linear guides ofpractically any type and length, according of the building block prin-ciple. The characteristics of the guidesinclude: a constant, high degree of runningaccuracy low-friction stick-slip-free operation high speed of travel low heat generation low friction and high reliability high stiffness excellent load carrying capacityFor applications where high acce-lerations occur or where strokes areshort and of high frequency, SKF railguides with dry sliding liners are guides are also suitable formachine tool applications where thegood damping properties of theseplain bearing guides is of greater im-portance than the lower friction of therolling element rail guides .

For thoseapplications where rail guides , for in-stance because of their limited travelare unsuitable, SKF can supply alter-native forms of linear guidance systems. If you would like further de-tails, please contact SKF for technicaladvice. We will be pleased to providethe required information without obligation and at no cost, or to pre-pare a technical catalogue brings together allthe basic data which we consider tobe of interest. Different require-ments for the guides do not call forchanges in the design or mechanicalenvironment. The choice of appropri-ate rail guides is determined solely bythe mechanical conditions underwhich the guide system is to operating requirements are covered by five different models (fig 1)which may be defined as rail guideswith: crossed roller cage assemblies ofthe standard LWR series ball cage assemblies of the LWR series crossed roller cage assemblies ofthe optimised LWRE series needle roller cage assemblies ofthe LWRM/LWRV series slideway liners of theLWRPM/LWRPV series7 Increased performance achievablewithout design modificationThe Modular System is based on thewell-proven LWR design which coversa wide range of applications.

The newoptimised LWRE series offers eitherdoubled stiffness and a load carryingcapacity increased by a factor of fiveor, alternatively, for a given load carry-ing capacity, a 50 % reduction inbearing size compared with the standard LWR design (fig 2).carried out simply and with the mini-mum of all, where the user needs toincrease machine performance, a unitwith a higher load rating can be replacement is made easier bythe fact that no new attachment holesor fixing devices are required whenusing rail guides of the Modular Range. An additional advantage is theworld-wide availability through distri-butors, simply by quoting the appro-priate catalogue number. The internaldesign of the LWRE Series assures in-creased operational life through theeven distribution of load.

This resultsfrom the optimisation of the cross-section, enabled through the use oflarger rolling elements. The new de-sign allows a significant improvementin the roller/raceway contact perfor-mance. An important additional bene-fit from the updating programme isthe introduction of the practicallymaintenance-free cage made of POMwhich matches are stringent demandsfor long operational life of the rollingelements and maintains is dimensio-nal stability up to +80 C. The indivi-dual rollers are well covered and thespace between the rails is almost filled, thus providing good protectionagainst contamination. A special cha-racteristic of these cages is that theyconsist of snap-on elements and canbe adapted to suit individual needs(fig 3). Conventional crossed roller cages have their rollers arranged alternately evenly spaced, so that onlyhalf the rollers in a preloaded guideare load-bearing while the remainderact as idlers.

In the new LWRE cagethese essentially unused rollers cabbe partially turned in the direction ofthe load. For this purpose each indivi-dual cage segment is designed to beturned through 90 about the longitu-dinal axis. These are manual adjust-ments and no special instructions arerequired when ordering from the rangeIn order to simplify the application ofModular Range of rail guides even easier, all guides within a given sizerange have the same external dimen-sions and thus fit the space require-ments of most commercially availablerail guides . This results in a very wide choice in terms of load carryingcapacity, stiffness and operating the economical point of view, the use of the optimised LWRE Seriesoffers a double advantage. Firstly (although the initial cost is higher) therange of application is extended signi-ficantly as regards stiffness and loadcarrying capacity; this results in a bet-ter price/performance ratio.
