While it s been a few months since we ve reported to our membership, I can assure you that we have been aggressively pursuing a number of initiatives to increase the value of AIPG to our membership. In October 2014 we hosted a Tier 2 vapor intrusion training seminar where Marty Hamper (GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc.)

2 , Section Board Member) presented on the intricacies of the Tier 2 calculations for the vapor intrusion pathway. The evening included a number of great exhibitors, a great technical workshop, and thought provoking questions and dialogue. Greg Dunn from Illinois EPA was on hand for a Q&A portion at the end of the program and commended Marty on the quality and comprehensive coverage of his presentation. In addition, Craig McCammack (V3 Companies and Section Vice-President) and John Noyes (Cabeno Environmental) organized a soil gas field sampling training demonstration. The feedback we received from this meeting was spectacular. I d like to offer my sincere thanks to Marty, Craig, John, Greg and our other board members that donated their time to making this event a success! In addition, I d like to thank all of our meeting sponsors for their support of AIPG.

3 We look forward to continuing to offer these types of events in the future. Positioning off the success of the training workshop, our Section is utilizing revenue from the meeting and individual donations to retain a lobbyist to assist with changes to the Geology Act, which is set to sunset in January 2016. We have introduced bills into the Senate and House that extends the Act for another 10 years. The bill also includes language related to the Geologist Intern and administrative changes to the Act to bring it up to standard with the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Our lobbyist is helping us navigate the bureaucracy and obtain alignment between all parties that hold an interest in the Act. This winter we also welcomed a new Section Board Member. Dave Heidlauf (Environ) has been approved as a Section Board Member. Dave has been a long-time supporter of AIPG locally and nationally.

4 We are very excited to welcome Dave to the forward, the SPRING Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at Morton Arboretum. The technical presentation is titled: Geology of the Illinois Basin with an emphasis on the Shawnee Hills and will be presented by C. Pius Weibel (retired Illinois Geologic Survey).Following the sequence from the past few years, this presentation will be a teaser for the SUMMER field trip to Southern Illinois. As with previous field trips, we plan to offer the field trip free to AIPG student members. More details will follow at the SPRING Meeting. We ve also been very busy with recruiting new Student Sections and I hope to have some good news to report related to these efforts at our SPRING Meeting. As we all know, many hands make light work. We are looking for young professionals that can serve on our Board and/or as liaisons between our AIPG section and student chapters.

6 Dave has worked in the environmental consulting industry since the late 80 s and is currently an environmental h y d r o g e o l o g i s t f o r E N V I RO N In t e r n a t i o n a l Corporation. He received his bachelors in geology from Wheaton College and masters from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Dave s work has e n t a i l e d a w i d e v a r i e t y o f e n v i r o n m e n t a l b a n k r u p t c y, i n d u s t r i a l redevelopment, and Superfund related projects across the US. The love of rocks also abounds into Dave s family, his wife Lisa is also a geologist and an adjunct geology instructor at Wheaton College. Recently, Dave traveled to Nicaragua to work with a faith based group s fledging efforts to learn how to install shallow water wells for local communities. He had fun drilling through local volcanic tuff deposits, and visiting the Masaya Volcanic National park, home to one of the more active volcanoes in the Fire and Ice National Conference in Alaska!

We are hoping to have our section represented, the location presents a unique opportunity to explore some of the most exciting geology in the US and connect with AIPG colleagues. Abstracts for presentations are due May 4th; You for $1,700 in Lobbying Contributions!We would like to say a personal thank you for the leadership that several individuals and companies have taken to support our lobbying efforts to renew the Geologist Licensing Act in Illinois. This act protects the health and safety of the public and is important legislation for our profession as geologists. Plans are in the works to have Joseph Devera of the Illinois State Geological Survey lead the trip to the Shawnee National Forest to investigate some actual consolidated rock and associated landforms! We are tentatively planning to visit Garden of the Gods and Millstone Bluff, a National Register of Historic Places site where Paleozoic Era geology has preserved an ancient stone fort and petryglyphs.

9 Be ready to collect some fossils and enjoy some of Illinois most exciting geology. To pre-register please contact Dave Heidlauf or Ramona Cornea Member Reflection, Stratigraphy Class TripNydra Harvey-Costello - Student, Eastern Illinois UniversityThis semester at Eastern Illinois University I participated in a four day field trip to Tishomingo, Mississippi as part of our stratigraphy class. The trip was organized by my advisor/professor Dr. Burns and a helping hand from Dr. Cornebise, the geology department chair. The trip was extremely fulfilling trip for me, especially because I will be attending field camp this SUMMER . Dr. Burns did an amazing job introducing me to field methods, and I have developed a new confidence for identifying different rocks applying the techniques she taught. Dr. Burns developed our skills in drawing, labeling, scaling, and unfolding the story of differing rock formations, one being the Bangor limestone.

10 I am now conscious of the questions I need to ask as I am investigating geology in new locations.
