1 St. Alphonsus St. George St. James Hopewell, NJ Titusville, NJ Pennington, NJ 2 Dear parishioners , Last year at this time we were preparing to celebrate Ascension Thursday and due to the COVID epidemic it was changed to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. This year our bishops in New Jersey have decided to make this a permanent change, so starting this year and every year going forward in New Jersey, and most other states, we will celebrate the Ascension of the Lord on the Seventh Sunday of Easter. This change has been discussed by our bishops for several years as it was the trend in so many of our dioceses in the United States, and finally it has become the practice of the Diocese of Trenton and the entire dioceses of the Latin Rite in the state of New Jersey.
2 The date change is certainly another modification in our traditional way of doing things as Catholics, and as we listen to this week s readings we certainly see that change is always a part of our lives. In both the Acts of the Apostles and Luke s Gospel, written by the same person, we hear the great change in the lives of the Apostles. As Jesus Ascends to the Father in heaven, the Apostles take to heart his words: Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repent-ance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all nations, beginning with Jerusalem.
3 You are witnesses of these things. Jesus work was completed here on earth, but not his mission, that would continue through the Apostles and all of those who would follow Jesus Christ. The disciples of Jesus continue to grow in that work from the Apostles right down to each one of us today. It continues today because Jesus did not leave us on our own, And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. As Jesus leaves, the Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles and each of us to give us the ability to continue the mission of bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ into our lives and the lives of those we meet each day.
4 Just as the Apostles returned to Jerusalem with great joy, let that joy be in our hearts on this Sunday as we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. Note: I want to say a big thank you to our parish councils of St. James , St. George , St. Alphonsus and the Linked Leadership Council for their tireless work with the synod process; the St. James Picnic celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the building of the main church; The 50th Anniversary of St. George Parish (June 5, 11:00 am Mass); the 145th Anniversary celebration of St. Alphonsus Church (Date TBD). Much of the work goes on behind the scenes, but they are all an invaluable asset to our parishes here in the Catholic Community of Hopewell Valley.
