1 DMG, 1994, Rev. 2000, Rev. 2/2006 1 GUILFORD COUNTY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Supervisor - Social work Services EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM Services DEPARTMENT GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Under limited supervision, performs a variety of supervisory and administrative tasks in monitoring and assisting the operation of Social Services in the County school system. Employee is responsible for the direct supervision of staff whose Services promote the maximum development of all students by prevention and/or alleviation of problems that interfere with the tasks of learning. Employee coordinates the provision of school Social work Services and provides consultation, supervision, and evaluation for school Social workers.

2 Employee represents the division on various committees, provides training for the system, and handles various administrative duties for the department. Reports to Executive Director of Student Services . SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Provides supervision and performance appraisal responsibilities (including up to three observations for some staff) licensed school Social workers. Provides consultation to school Social workers, administrators, other school staff and individuals in the community on matters such as child abuse/neglect, attendance and Social service issues.

3 Plans various programs and supervises the implementation of those programs. Provides system wide training for programs and initiatives including Suicide Intervention Teams, School Development Program, and Student Staff Support Teams. Assists with planning and implementing the work of the system wide Crisis Team, and other teams as determined by the administration, , GCS Standards Committee. Maintains contact with schools, parents and students; collaborates with various community agencies to provide Services needed by students. Supervisor - Social Services DMG, 1994, Rev. 2000, Rev. 2/2006 2 Coordinates the efforts system wide programs for parents, students and the community: Homeless Education monitors the budget, plans activities, evaluates Services and assists with grant application Parent Outreach plans and implements programs to schools and community with Social workers Represents the school system on the following community teams/councils (these committees are state mandated).

4 Child Fatality Task Force Department of Social Services Permanency Planning Committee Networks with a number of agencies/initiatives in the community who provide Services and resources to our students ( , Salvation Army, juvenile court, Social Services , etc.). Serves as system wide coordinator for Homeless Education Program; arranges and presents programs and Services as requested; collaborates with community groups as appropriate to meet needs of homeless students. Meets with individuals and groups in the community sharing information, making presentations and serving on committees or task forces on behalf of the system.

5 Provides field placement for Social work interns from local universities; interviews, screens and matches interns with staff, monitors performance. Monitors completion of assessments performed by school Social workers for Exceptional Child identification. Compiles monthly statistical data for department of school Social Services . Develops manuals, forms and other accountability documents. Collaborates with staff involved with community partnerships ( , Communities In Schools). Performs basic personnel administration duties, including hiring, orienting new staff, assigning school Social workers to schools, scheduling caseloads, disciplining, evaluating, and granting leave; prepares division budget and related reports; monitors expenditures; compiles data, develops manuals, forms and other accountability documents.

6 Supervisor - Social Services DMG, 1994, Rev. 2000, Rev. 2/2006 3 Represents the division at system wide administrative , department and pupil support Services meetings; represents the school system in state and local projects and programs; serves as the Superintendent designee on various state-mandated committees ( , Child Fatality Task Force, Department of Social Services Permanency Planning Committee). Plans and coordinates in-service activities for staff, including two (2) staff meetings per month and meetings with the departmental leadership team. Assists in the development of department goals; represents the school system as a spokesperson in the community.

7 ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs other related work as required. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Masters and Bachelors Degrees in Social work ; Advanced certification in School Social work ; completed requirements for certification in Curriculum and Supervision; certified by the Academy of Certified Social Works (national certification) and possesses the School Social work Specialist credential (national certification). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess school Social work certification and mentor certification. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.

8 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, typewriters, copiers, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to assistants or subordinates. Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, purchase orders, publications, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, records, performance appraisals, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.

10 Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including counseling terminology.
