2 Stand clear of the propeller at Disconnect the battery in accordance withthe AIRCRAFT manufacturers Remove the ENGINE cowling in accordancewith the AIRCRAFT manufacturers instructions,to gain access to the starter and Disconnect the electrical lead to the enginestarter motor in accordance with the aircraftmanufacturers Remove any accessories, lines, hoses andwire bundles that restrict access to thestarter motor and starter adapter inaccordance with the instructions provided inthe appropriate ENGINE overhaul manual andthe AIRCRAFT manufacturers Remove the starter motor in accordancewith the instructions provided in theapplicable ENGINE overhaul manual oraircraft maintenance Reference Figure 1.

3 Using a 12 point deepsocket loosen and remove nut (4) and spacer(5) or air-conditioning compressor drivesheeve and shims and sleeve (6). Do notmisplace or discard shims as they will needto be reinstalled to assure correct alignmentof the air-conditioning compressor drivesheeve, idle sheeve and compressor Following the instructions provided in theapplicable ENGINE overhaul manual, removethe starter adapter from the Position the starter adapter to allow accessto body (7).9. Remove five sets of hardware (1 & 3) andseal retaining clip (2).10. 5 Replace if wear or damage AND ASSEMBLY1. Using clean ENGINE oil, lubricate sleeve (6).2. Using clean ENGINE oil, lubricate the insidediameter of seal P/N Carefully install sleeve P/N 654229 into sealP/N 653171. Insure that the seal garterspring has not been dislodged from the seallip Using Aviation Permatex, P/N646942,lightly coat the parting surface of body (7).Allow the Permatex to set for a few minutesuntil slightly tacky. See figure Using Grade 3 Silk Thread, P/N 641543,apply a single line of thread over thePermatex surface of body (7). See Figure Insure that gear (12) is correctly Carefully install body (7) onto Install five sets of hardware (3) and (1).

6 Donot install any hardware on the stud adjacentto the oil seal bore. This hardware and sealretainer (2) will be installed after seal (8)and sleeve (6) are installed. Torque nuts (1)to 180 - 220 inch Install spacer (10) into body (7).10. Install bearing (9) into body (7).Note: Bearing (9) has a closed cageon one side and an open cage on theother. The bearing must be installedwith the closed or "Thrust" sidetoward the front of the ENGINE . Theword "Thrust" is stamped on Position the assembled oil seal (8) andsleeve (6) over the starter adapter shaft andinto the seal bore in body (7). Lightly tap orpress the seal and sleeve (8 and 6) as anassembly into its recess in body (7).

7 The sealmust be positioned flush with or within .030inches below the surface of its recess. SeeFigure Install washer (3), seal retaining clip (2) andnut (1) on stud adjacent to oil seal (8).Torque nut to 180 - 220 inch Lubricate starter adapter shaft gear withclean ENGINE oil. Using a new gasket andfollowing the instructions provided in theapplicable ENGINE overhaul manual reinstallthe starter adapter. Torque attachinghardware as specified in the applicableengine overhaul Reinstall spacer (5) or air-conditioning drivesheeve and shims onto starter adapter Lubricate shaft threads with clean ENGINE oiland install 12 point nut (4). 9 Re-connect the AIRCRAFT Perform an ENGINE ground run up inaccordance with the instructions provided inthe AIRCRAFT manufacturer s maintenancemanual, AIRCRAFT flight manual/pilotsoperating handbook. Operate the ENGINE forfive minutes at 900 to 1100 to coolthe ENGINE , then perform a normal shut downin accordance with the AIRCRAFT After completing the ENGINE ground run up,remove the ENGINE cowling in accordancewith the AIRCRAFT manufacturers Visually inspect the starter motor and starteradapter area for leaks and loose or missinghardware. Correct any discrepancies Following the instructions provided in theaircraft manufacturers maintenance manual,re-install the ENGINE Complete all log book and maintenancerecord entries prior to returning the engineand AIRCRAFT to service.
