We took the World s top performing ToupH glasselectrode Series and succeeded in increasing the electrode life by improving the performance of thereference electrode and strengthening the durability of glass material. Also, the pH measurement fieldhas been extended to new and unconventional measurement areas by commercialization of the glass-free ISFET electrode. This article describes features of this product in Technical ReportsIntroductionThis product is commercially manufactured as the 50 seriesand is a model change from the conventional D-20 seriesand F-20 Series and commemorates Horiba s 50thanniversary. In this development, a number of productlineups such as the pH Meter main body, electrodes, andcleaning solution have been produced simultaneously. Wehave focused on developing user-friendly products commonto all. We first decided the product concept by visiting alarge number of customers before commencingdevelopment.

Approximately a year and a half has nowpassed since the products were released, and we havereceived many favorable comments from our following are feature descriptions of each new Meter Main UnitThis development has seen a total of 14 models of the D-50series for on-site measurement and also the F-50 Series forlaboratory use, simultaneously produced in approximatelyone year, an unusually short pH MeterThe portable D-50 Series pH Meter has been produced foreasier on-site use and is based on the conventional D-20series. The main features are as follows:1. HandinessAs conventional meters are too large for some people tocarry in one hand, our main emphasis was on handiness suchthat the unit should be easily carried in one hand and so wereduced the size to 2/3 that of conventional units.

To realizethis size, we used a membrane switch for the switch sectionand separated the electrode holder from the main unit sothat the electrode can be carried in a LegibilityTo make the measured value more legible, we used a displaythat is approximately times larger than that of D-20 show when electrode replacement is required, anelectrode life indication was added in accordance with thesensitivity at the time of Easy data handling (D-52, 53, 54, 55)Conventionally an adapter has been required for connectionto a PC, but the RS-232C port connection has enabled directPC connection. Also, the main unit is capable of storing300 data records and automatic data storage with a minimuminterval of 2 seconds. These data can then be exported to aPC where a report can be pH MeterDuring commercial production of the Benchtop F-50 seriespH Meter (F-52, 53, 54, 55), our investigations revealedthat the most inconvenient points that customers are facingoccur when actually using the pH Meter .

The majority ofcustomers that anticipated problems were uneasy aboutpossible electrode and sample measurement difficultiesdespite there actually being no significant problems. Wetherefore focused on how the unit should respond in case ofdifficulties. Aiming for a positive response when a problemoccurs, we provided a human character for the pH Meter ,adding a sense of humor. The Doctor instructs with hisknow-how of pH measurement at turning on the characterswitch. Color screenFor the first time a color screen has been adopted for a pHmeter. In addition to the conventional digital display andgraphic display, an analog-style indicator has been used fordisplaying the measured value (Figure 3).Figure 3 Analog-style IndicatorGoing back more than ten years, pH meters were all equippedwith analog indicators, and so many customers have stronglyrequested their return.

Requiring no setup as the range is setautomatically, this analog-style screen is suitable forchecking for a stable indication condition, a featurerequested by a number of customer can select from seven display screen Navigation functionA character display shows the calibrated state aftercalibration, along with guidance for the standard solutionmeasurement while calibrating. When the calibration issuccessful, OK is displayed (Figure 4), and the value ofthe calibrated standard solution, electric potential, andtemperature are precisely displayed, so revealing theasymmetric potential and sensitivity. If the calibration fails, the cause of the failure is displayed and countermeasuresare displayed by pressing the Navi key (Figure 5). Thisfacilitates the operation if a problem 4 Display when Calibration has SucceededFigure 5 Display when Calibration has FailedThe 50 Series pH Meter92 English Edition PC interfaceAll the models of F-50 Series are equipped with a PCcommunication function through RS-232C.

The high-endmodels are equipped with the world s first compact flashmemory for a pH Meter . With 16 MB memory 3000 measurements can be stored. Eventhough it may be impractical to carry the PC to themeasurement site because the pH Meter is normally usedaround water, easy data transfer is possible. Additionallythe high-end models are equipped with a LAN networkingconnection, allowing communication of usage informationto a SoftwareThe PC software for both the D-50 Series and the F-50 seriesis available to download free after customer registration onHORIBA s web site. This software allows easy retrieval ofdata stored in the pH Meter and facilitates creating reportsfrom this PC software for Part 11, the first software for pH metersconforming to the Part 11 regulation, was also produced asthe PC software for F-55. The official name for Part 11 isFDA CFR 21 Part 11 issued by the Food and DrugAdministration (FDA), which is a regulation for confirmingreliable data and avoiding falsification of electronic means the unit is equipped with a function for preventingelectronic data from being falsified in order to correspondto this regulation.

These functions enable introduction ofthe pH Meter and its system to among others, thepharmaceutical industry with its stringent quality CheckerRecently a validation strategy for pH measurement has beenin great demand. The Meter s operation check is the key tothis requirement. Previously, small and highly precisecheckers did not exist. The pH checker X-51, provided withsimulation outputs such as pH, temperature, ion, anddissolved oxygen, is produced with the 50 , there is the X-52, with the conductivitysimulation output only. Even personnel unfamiliar with theservice technology can easily check the performance of apH Meter by using this checker with the F-50 Series . Theresponse can be definitely verified to InstallationQualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ),Performance Qualification (PQ) required by thepharmaceutical industry and the wide range of industriesthat have started using this 6 shows the screen of F-50 Series while checkingusing the pH checkFigure 6 Screens during Checking93 Technical ReportsGlass ElectrodeWe developed the electrode using our long-term experienceselling pH meters and to respond to customer requests asmuch as possible.
