Theme The HKIE Geotechnical Division is organizing a Seminar on The State-of-the-art Technology and Experience on Geotechnical engineering in Malaysia and Hong Kong , which aims to broaden Hong Kong Engineers horizon in Geotechnical engineering through experience sharing with their counterparts in Malaysia. Invited speakers will share with us about the advanced practices of design and construction of Geotechnical works in Malaysia and Hong Kong. The Seminar is one of the activities under the Project entitled Study on State-of-the-art Technology and Experience on Geotechnical engineering in Southeast Asian countries , which is funded by the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) of the HKSAR Government.

1 Theme The HKIE Geotechnical Division is organizing a Seminar on The State-of-the-art Technology and Experience on Geotechnical engineering in Malaysia and Hong Kong , which aims to broaden Hong Kong Engineers horizon in Geotechnical engineering through experience sharing with their counterparts in Malaysia. Invited speakers will share with us about the advanced practices of design and construction of Geotechnical works in Malaysia and Hong Kong. 2 Speakers Dr Johnny CHEUK Dr Cheuk is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Civil engineering of the University of Hong Kong. Dr Cheuk obtained his PhD from Cambridge University. Prior to joining HKU, he had worked for Maunsell Geotechnical Services Limited and City University of Hong Kong. His major research interests lie in the area of offshore engineering and slope stability problems. Ir Rupert K Y LEUNG Ir Rupert K Y Leung graduated with a bachelor degree in civil engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1986 and obtained his Dipl me d Ing nieur from the Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l Etat, France, in 1989. He joined Acer Consultants Limited (now Hyder Consulting Limited) upon his return to Hong Kong and has been working there since.

3 Over his 19 years in Hyder, Ir Rupert Leung has been involved in a large variety of civil and Geotechnical projects in both the public and private sector, with project locations spreading over Hong Kong, Mainland China, Middle East, Australia and Vietnam. He is currently a Director of Hyder Consulting Limited, responsible for its Geotechnical & Marine Function Group. Ir James W C SZE Ir James W C SZE graduated with a Bachelor Degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1994 and later obtained a part-time Master Degree from the same university in 2001. He is a Registered Geotechnical Engineer. Ir Sze is currently an Associate Director of Arup Hong Kong office which has more than 100 Geotechnical engineers.

4 He leads a Geotechnical team of more than 20 engineers in design and supervision of the Geotechnical aspects for a variety of developments. He has extensive experience in the investigation, design, instrumentation and construction supervision for deep foundation and basement excavation projects in Hong Kong as well as in other countries such as China, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand as well as Middle East. Ir TAN Ek Khai Ir Tan Ek Khai is a practicing registered professional engineer in Malaysia. He has been a key design team member in Geotechnical engineering , both as an engineering consultant and contractor, for large scale infrastructure projects in Malaysia and internationally.

5 He is currently an Assistant Manager in Gamuda Bhd in charge of Field engineering for a package of works of the Proposed Electrified Double Tracking Project from Ipoh to Padang Besar in Malaysia. He has recently completed a 2-1/2 year posting in the Middle East with Gamuda s, the New Doha International Airport project in Qatar. As a co-opted committee member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, he is also a member of the Drafting Committee for the Local Annexe to the Eurocode 7. Ir TAN Yean Chin Ir Tan Yean Chin obtained his Bachelor Degree in Civil engineering with First Class Honours from University Technology Malaysia in 1992. He later obtained his Master Degree in Geotechnical engineering and the Chin Fung Kee Prize for outstanding academic performance from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok in 1994.

6 Ir Tan is currently the Broad member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Vice President of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Chairman of BEM Standing Committee on Professional Practice, Chairman of IEM Standing Committee The HKIE Geotechnical Division Seminar on The State-of-the-art Technology and Experience on Geotechnical engineering in Malaysia and Hong Kong Wednesday, 25 February 2009 Room 401, Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre 1 Expo Drive, Wanchai, Hong Kong on Corporate Affairs and the Advisor of the Geotechnical engineering Technical Division of IEM. He is also the Secretary General of the Asian Federation of engineering Organisations (AFEO) and Federation of engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP).

7 He has published more than 40 technical papers on Geotechnical engineering in local and overseas conferences and seminars . In 1998, he won The Tan Sri Raja Zainal Prize presented by IEM for an outstanding technical paper. He is now a Director of G&P Geotechnics Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Gue & Partners Sdn Bhd), a Geotechnical consultant firm. Ir Vincent S H TSE Ir Vincent Tse received his civil and Geotechnical engineering education and obtained his bachelor and M. Phil degree in the Hong Kong University. After graduation, Ir Tse worked for Scott Wilson for four years and involved in various slope, deep excavation and foundation projects before joining Geotechnical engineering Office in 1984.

8 In his years with the GEO, Ir Tse has taken office in a wide range of responsibilities in the Office, including ground investigation, district checking, advisory service, special projects, landslide investigation, and mines and quarries. Since 2004, Ir Tse has assumed the duty of Chief Geotechnical Engineer/Mines and the Superintendent of Mines, who takes charge of the regulatory function on control of explosives and blasting, and the administration of contract quarries. Ir Tse is also serving as a committee member in the HKIE GDC at present. Ir YEE Thien Seng Ir Yee graduated in Department of Civil engineering from the University of Malaysia in 1978 and set up his own consultancy practice, Geo Consult, in 1994.

9 He has written more than a dozen conference papers and serves the IEM as a committee member of the Geotechnical engineering Technical Division . Ir YEE Yew Weng Ir Yee is the Chairman of the Geotechnical Technical Division of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. He is a Director of Keller (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. He has been nearly 20 years experience in Geotechnical engineering including the design and execution of ground improvement works, especially dealing with Vibro Stone Columns, Deep Soil Mixing and Grouting Techniques. He was previously attached with Arup Geotechnics where he has carried out foundation and deep basement design for many local and international projects.

10 He has also been involved in numerous slope stabilisation works including anchored retaining walls up to 40m high. He holds a Master degree for research work on offshore piles, piezocone and soil testing and has written over 10 technical papers in regional and international conferences. Registration Fee HK$500 for full registration; HK$400 for early-bird registration (before 24 Jan 2009); HK$300 for HKIE Graduate members (Seats are limited to 50 on a first-come-first-serve basis. A copy of HKIE Membership Card must be presented together with the registration form.) The fee includes a copy of Seminar proceedings and coffee breaks. Lunch is not included.
