3 This issue highlights on the continued pursuit of the Mission in enhancing the economic development in Kenya as envisioned in Kenya s Vision 2030 which is one of the major priorities of the Government of Kenya . During the period under review the Kenya South Africa bilateral relations were further boosted by the official state visit to Kenya of HE Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa. The highlight of the visit was the signing of six agreements/Memoranda of understanding in various sectors which included security, immigration, environment, trade, investments and defence.

4 On our diaspora engagement, the Mission held a Diaspora Leaders meeting and undertook various consular visits in line with the Kenya Diaspora policy. In addition, the mission organized the trade and investments and Diaspora investment forums. On the economic diplomacy front, the Mission organised two successful events which include, the 2nd Kenya Trade Investment Summit in September 2016 in Cape Town as well as Kenya Diaspora Investment Conference in November 2016 in Johannesburg. I take this opportunity to express gratitude to our various partners in private sector and entire staff of the Mission for invaluable support in implementation of the Mission s mandate.

Kamau HIGH COMMISSIONER THE TAIFA E-BULLETIN A BIANNUAL E-BULLETIN OF THE Kenya HIGH Commission IN PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, July December 2016 Page 4 of 23 Kenya -SOUTH AFRICA BILATERAL RELATIONS THE STATE VISIT TO Kenya BY JACOB ZUMA, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA At the invitation of Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya , Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, paid a historic State Visit to Kenya from 10 12 October, 2016. President Zuma was accompanied by a delegation consisting of six Ministers, senior officials and a business delegation.

6 During the visit, aimed at further strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between Kenya and South Africa, the two Heads of State held substantive and fruitful discussions on issues of common interest touching on bilateral, regional and international issues. The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the excellent cooperation that exists between the two countries. In this regard, the two leaders witnessed the signing of the following Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding: 1. MoU for Cooperation between Kenya Investment Authority, and Investment South Africa; 2.

7 MOU on Police Cooperation; 3. Agreement on Visa Exemption for Passport Holders of Diplomatic and Ordinary/Service Passports; 4. MoU on Cooperation in the Field of Biodiversity, Conservation and Management; 5. Agreement on Defence Cooperation. 6. Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Kenya and the Government of the Republic of South Africa concerning the development and implementation of LAPSSET Corridor Projects in the Republic of Kenya THE TAIFA E-BULLETIN A BIANNUAL E-BULLETIN OF THE Kenya HIGH Commission IN PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, July December 2016 Page 5 of 23 In conclusion, the President Jacob Zuma invited President Uhuru Kenyatta to pay a reciprocal State Visit to South Africa at a date to be agreed through diplomatic channels.

8 The President of the Republic of Kenya graciously accepted the invitation. Amb Jean Kamau gives her speech during the 53rd Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Pretoria Club Kenya HIGH Commission ATTENDS LESOTHO s 50th JUBILEE INDEPENDENCE CLEBRATION IN MASERU Deputy High Commissioner Amb Lemarron Kaanto represented the Kenya High Commission during the Lesotho s Independence on 4th October 2016 in Maseru. Lesotho achieved independence from Britain in 1996. Lesotho Independence Day is celebrated on October 4, marking a public holiday that commemorates the independence of the Kingdom of Lesotho from Great Britain in 1966.

9 The commemorative service was well attended. Various service organisations and embassies were also represented. The celebrations were led by King Letsie III and Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili. The heads of state of Swaziland, Botswana and Zimbabwe attended the celebrations. The Deputy High Commissioner later met with, the Kenyan Community in Swaziland. THE TAIFA E-BULLETIN A BIANNUAL E-BULLETIN OF THE Kenya HIGH Commission IN PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, July December 2016 Page 6 of 23 TRADE AND INVESTMENT PROMOTION THE VOLKSWAGEN GROUP ESTABLISHES AN AUTO MANUFACTURING BASE IN Kenya Following meetings between the Head of State and representatives of VW in Berlin in early April 2016 and a follow up visit to Nairobi in May 2016, whose purpose was to provide feedback to government officials on their interests in establishing a manufacturing base in Kenya .

10 The company has settled on Kenya as the country of choice for their business in East Africa. The board and management of VW are committed to advance a joint partnership with the Kenya Government. The VW production factory was launched on 21st December, 2016 by the President Uhuru Kenyatta. THE 2ND Kenya TRADE AND INVESTMENT SUMMIT 1ST -2ND SEPTEMBER 2016, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA The Kenya Mission in Pretoria held its 2nd Trade and Investment Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, from 1st to 3rd September 2016. The 2nd Trade and Investment Summit was intended to build on the gains of the inaugural Trade and investment Summit of 2015, and further contribute to showcasing trade and investment opportunities available in Kenya particularly to elicit current projects in Kenya attractive to foreign investment.
