4 As seen above,VHB tape is used to replace screws,rivets, welds, and liquid adhesives. The tape will bond side skins to it is used on overlap seams for skinto skin bonding. VHB tape has elasticproperties that absorb shock and flex forreliability against wind, vibration, andthermal expansion/contraction. 6 Side paneldesign is also an important factor. In constrained construction using 3M VHB Tape,the top and bottom of the panels are mechanicallyfastened (Fig. 2). This constrains panel expansionand increases force on the taped seams that can leadto panel separation. An unconstrained design is much more durable. Mechanical fasteners are completelyeliminated and thetaped panels expand and contract without constraint at top andbottom (Fig. 3). This preferred method of panel attachmentgreatly reduces expansionforces on the seams and helps ensure a long lasting bond.

The side panels onone test Trailer were attached with 3M VHB Tapes. Panels on the other test trailerwere mechanically fastened. An independent test team at Bosch performed durabilitytesting over various road conditions and exposure to heat cycling.
